Did you watch our man Avery on Spencer 4 Hire? I watched a couple of episodes. Spencer was dull but Hawk was the man. Spen-SAHHHHHHHHH

I remember seeing him. I always thought of Hawk as a nouveau Mr. T. Seems like my dad always made me leave the room when Spencer came on.

I recall the show only very vaguely - of avery brooks I just remember him being like a sort of a streetwise "Shaft" type.

I've kept my eye open for airings of A Man Called Hawk. Nada.

I've only seen a few of Avery's other works, namely his tiny role in American History X. So I'm itching to see him in some of his heavier roles. But like I said... Spencer/Hawk don't seem to be on the syndication hot list.

The pilot episode was on in the UK recently (Hallmark I think). I was hoping they would show the series, but they just seemed to show it as a TV movie. Damn good series though. I seem to recall him calling a character on his own series "Old Man". :)

Spencaaaaahhhh!!! I watched that every day, and when DS9 aired for the first time, I was like.....hey! It's friggin Hawk!

I challenge anyone to read a Spenser novel (even all the ones written before the TV show was made) and not automatically think of Mr. Brooks as Hawk. Rarely has a literary character been cast so perfectly. For that matter, they struck gold again with Robert Urich as well. Call it a triple with Tom Selleck as Jessie Stone (even though he's 20 years older than the literary character) Whoever casts these Robert Parker adaptations has a pretty darned good feel for the material.

Evidently you've never seen Joe Mantegna as Spenser. What a joke.

As for Brooks ... he was far better as Hawk than Sisko.

As big a Spenser fan as I am, I've never seen a Joe Mantegna Spenser film, for exactly the reason you state above.

Deep Space 9 was the first thing I'd seen Avery Brooks in. The next time I saw something with Brooks in was 15 Minutes.

^ Besides Spencer For Hire and DS9, Avery had minor roles in "The Big Hit" and "American History X" which were very good.

BTW: Wish I saw the play he was in a couple of years ago.

I watched Spencer for Hire.

Not every episode or anything...but if I happened to turn on the TV while it was on, I never turned it off.

I liked Robert Urich...but Avery Brooks stole the show most of the time.

It was must see TV for me. It was never up to the Parker novels, but it was entertaining.

Hawk was a somewhat one dimensional character on the tube, so I like Avery Brooks more in teh role of Captain Sisko.
