Babylon 5

We'll see if this actually goes anywhere because The CW has been doing a lot more prioritization recently when it comes to its broadcast slate and getting a development deal from them isn't the 'greenlight guarantee' it used to be.

This is from Claudia on Facebook:

I know some of you saw the announcement that WB is doing a B5 reboot series and I know you have lots of questions for me like “Are you playing Ivanova?” “Are there going to be telepaths?” “What year is it taking place in?”
Well folks, I know nothing…..zip…nada. Joe has kept us in the loop from day one on this, because he wants us involved with the show, but we have no idea at this time what's in the script or what the story is. Only Joe knows that for now, so you should go bug him about it. He won't tell you, but the results should be amusing.

I personally am grateful that I will, once again, be uttering the great maker’s fabulous dialogue….but I know not what that will entail. Exciting, eh?

Claudia's comments on Facebook and Twitter don't make any sense to me because I can't figure out how or why she and the other surviving cast members would have anything to do with the "from the ground up reboot" this project is being described as.

It’s extremely common for reboots and remakes to have cameos and stunt-casting of actors from prior incarnations of the property. The best example for what Claudia is describing is probably Tom Zarek from the new Battlestar Galactica. And they thought about including more actors from the first BSG, such as Dirk Benedict as the Cylon God and, more seriously, Jane Seymour as Admiral Cain.

To me, Claudia's comments read like she's confusing this Reboot with something else that JMS may have been trying to put together involving the surviving OG cast.

Edit: With nuBSG, Richard Hatch asked to be involved after he saw the Miniseries and realized that his earlier criticisms of the project were unfounded, so I don't think there's an equivalency here.

All of this has happened before. And it will happen again.

Oops wrong franchise. But I think I want this to go ahead, despite my initial reaction when I first read the headline. I mean it's JMS!

What I mean is that SUPERNATURAL had a very loyal fanbase. And it was not a small number, either. It was enough to keep the show going for 15 years, longer than any other genre show in the U.S.

I'm pretty sure The CW doesn't have a fanbase like that anymore. Bringing B5 in might help fill that gap, because there are a lot of B5 fans out there, and it keeps growing.

I won't want this reboot to be a 15 year journey, but 5 years is a good run. Honestly, I don't care if JMS can tell his story in 3 years or 8 years... as long as it has a beginning, middle, and end, I'm fine with it.

I'm going to be cautiously optimistic about this one, because this is the first series that I truly love that is getting the reboot treatment for tv. And only because JMS is involved.

Huh.

I'm not sure how to respond to this news. On the one hand I'm thrilled that JMS and company are returning to the Babylon 5 universe, but on the other hand, I'm not all that thrilled about a reboot. Yes, Battlestar Galactica showed how it can be done but in that case, it went from a somewhat cheesy 70s show to a gritty, hard look at humanity show. Depressingly, I was going to say that the separation in time from the respective premieres is larger for Battlestar Galactica, but it's actually going to be Babylon 5 with the greater margin! Damn, I feel old.

Either way, this leaves me wondering what's going to be the strong contrast here and what's the point of doing it all over again? Obviously, I'll wait and see before I jump to conclusions. I trust JMS, of course.

But I rather see new stories in the already established universe.

A reboot makes the most sense to me. I'm excited by this news, and the possibility of seeing a big-budget Babylon 5 universe, especially the station interiors. Let's hope they get that HBO Max money like Superman And Lois.

Bummer that all the articles fail to mention Sinclair (my favorite character and Michael O'Hare gave an amazing performance) and only reference Sheridan.

However, whether Sinclair or Sheridan is the lead, I'd like them to cast a POC actor instead of another lily white space hero. Also, there's an opportunity to cast a trans actor in the role of Delenn if they use the character's original transformation arc.

Bruce Boxleitner as President Clark... maybe? Claudia Christian is Ivanova's mother? Peter Jurasick as Morden? Patricia Tallman as Bester?

I wonder if JMS'll go back to some of his abandoned ideas along with new ones he'll no doubt be doing. Could Babylon 4 replace Babylon 5 midway through this time around? A trans Delenn? Sinclair's original arc?

The possibilities are endless.
