Babylon 5

Legend of the Rangers was a casualty of the ratings when it was aired opposite a major football game as well as the fact that SyFi wanted to own part of the series had it happened.

Legend of the Rangers was a casualty of sucking out loud.

I didn't think LOTR was that bad. Sure the Hand felt like Shadow rip offs but I thought the pilot was alright. I thought the main cast had potential. I do wish Martell had been David Sheridan though.

Yeah, the script could have done with another draft or three (it was a little too self aware at times), the effects were oddly lopsided in terms of quality (ranging from cheap and amateurish, to serviceable, to genuinely impressive for it's time/budget) and they *really* should have stuck to the original--less sweaty--concept of the zero-g tactical interface thing.

Otherwise it was a solid pilot with a good cast. Indeed, the chemistry between the two principles (the human Ranger captain and the Minbari telepath) was as good as any I've seen in a TV pilot.

I wasn't too worried about the main villain seeming oddly familiar. That whole thing had "red herring" positively scrawled all over it.

Although, that the entire "movie" was based on the idea that Ranger philosophy is stupid and human cowardice is better, was odd.

It was well known that the Minbari were extremely hide-bound when it came to tradition. I wasn't surprised when JMS indicated that the overbearing emphasis on the 'we die for the one' was an indication of something wrong with the Ranger Council at all.

That was what I liked best, that the cast had great chemistry right out of the gate. Would have loved to see more of the Narn engineer.

I never thought the Hand were at all Shadow-like. Why would I believe a subjugated toady about their supposed strength? Just because somebody said they were ever-so-powerful didn't mean they were and they seemed awfully easy to beat.

I do wish Martell had been David Sheridan though.

Couldn't be. David Sheridan was only about 5 years old when the events of Rangers happened. Even with the original idea of David aging rapidly, I think his training would have taken a while for him to make captain. ;)

I'll just say I thought LOTR suffered from a variety of problems...though not necessarily anything worse than those faced by the B5 pilot. Still, the changes between that and a potential series would have needed to be noticeable for me to keep watching...without being annoyed, at least.

The cast didn't bother me though. That I recall.

I remember the Original Star Trek actors complaining that they got screwed over for not getting a cut of home video sales,
They didn't even get paid for syndication. This was true of all the old shows. That's why syndicated shows were so cheap and affordable for local stations to lease and inundate the audience with. Ironically, these shows owe their cult status, in part, to the creators getting screwed.

I'm a big fan of the B5 universe, but Legend of the Rangers disappointed me quite a bit.

Sort of true -- the original series actors got paid for the first four or five re-runs, and would have been compensated had any of the shows been exploited theatrically. Once those initial reruns were out of the way, though, they got nothing.

Well, i finally finished season one, and I must say I liked it. It was a pretty rocky start, but it definitely got better as it went. The finale was very good and I'll be getting season two. My favorite line of the whole season was when Londo was teaching Lennier to play cards and he tells the other players at the table "Don't mind him, he's from out of town."
It's very different than Star Trek, and that's good. Can't wait to see what's coming.

Season 1 gag roll.

Maybe the best line ever starts at one minute 36.

Actually, I did know about the residuals-- I think they diminished with each rerun, too-- but I didn't know about the "exploited theatrically" part, and I'm not quite sure what it means. Like if the episodes were clipped together into a movie, like was done with Man From UNCLE?

Not for B5, but just before Christmas, Pat Tallman mentioned on facebook that she just got another $5 check in the mail because somebody ran Austin Powers somewhere.

I fell into a show hole and decided to give Babylon 5 a try. I know it was a popular show, but had never had a chance to see it. I bought season 1 and I've watched the pilot and first episode, and I gotta tell you, so far I'm not impressed. It seems kinda cheezy. Is it gonna get better? What season was the best?

The overall plot unabashedly lifts from The Lord of the Rings and it has some of the worst acting you'll ever see on television, notably from Bruce Boxleitner and Jerry Doyle. (Jeff Conway is pretty bad, too.) The sets are hilariously cheap. Some of the writing is way too on-the-nose for its own good.

But the series, as a whole, tells a good story. Enjoy Michael O'Hare.

There's nothing wrong with Boxleitner or Doyle (apart from their being Republicans-and that's just me), Timby. As for 'cheese' I'll take the acting in this show over ones that are more critically acclaimed.:vulcan:

Y'know what I'd forgotten a couple times in my life about Bruce?

Tron.

Mother ####ing Tron.

Reruns of Chuck.

There's Bruce as Awesom's dad, and every third episode of Chuck and there's a reminder about how Tron is Chuck's favourite movie and... EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED!

It must be great to be a rich-and-famous actor.

It's a slow-burn, think of it as a slow train gathering more power and more speed the show Babylon its best described as the ion-drive of science fiction. I binged it all and Season 2 and 3 is some of the best scifi writing for tv, I think it still holds up as dated this series looks. It jumps the shark I think in S-5? but if youre near the end of S1 keep going, it gets very good.

I'm a few more episodes in, and it all seems to be getting better. The dialog, the acting, the over all look of the series has also improved. Liking it more and more.

Keep going

There was a cool Tron reunion on one episode where David Warner, Bruce Boxleitner, and (the actor who portrays Londo) were all together.

Peter Jurasik - yes, I never noticed that about Grail, thanks.

ETA: No, hang on a moment, Grail was a season one episode so BB can't have been in it. Was there another episode with David Warner in it?
