Babylon 5: The Lost Tales

I liked the Sheridan story; it was classic Babylon 5, and I love anything with Galen in it. The Lockley story was ok, but it felt a bit off. The two stories didn't feel connected enough to one another, either.
Microscopic budget. Great idea, but limited due to money.
The Sheridan story was nicely told, and it was fun to see Galen again. Plus, the new Centauri Prince was cute. And great casting, since we got Teryl Rothery in for a bit part.
The Lochley story was dismal. It's entirely set on the station, which is completely empty. The lack of budget crushed this story. Yeah, ok, people are avoiding this particular area, whatever. So we have like two background people on a station with a quarter million people? I don't buy it at all.
We'll never know what these could have looked like with a proper budget. As it is, we've got one darn good story and ... well, did I mention Chris Franke is back with his music? That's positive.
That said, the new opening with flashes of the characters from the series and G'Kar's voice was brilliant. I wish the rest had lived up to that.
As I've said before, I'm among the few who preferred the Lochley story. The look at Catholicism in a spacefaring future was a very JMS theme, and I found the demon-possessed guy to be wonderfully creepy. And the ending was genuinely surprising.
The Sheridan story, meanwhile, was just completely predictable, although I did very much enjoy seeing the characters of Sheridan and, especially, Galen, again.
Overall, though, despite the good intentions, the budget was just so low that the whole thing had a sort of pathetic, desperate feel to it. I'm glad JMS put a fork in the "Lost Tales" once he realized that Warner would never throw any real money at it.

There's some positive things to say about them (the new visual effects, the music, the return of the actors), but both segments end up being pretty dismal due to the limited budget. And they're not helped by the dismal writing. From the script, the Garibaldi segment wouldn't have fared much better had it been filmed.
I'm glad JMS tried, but like previous efforts to breathe life into the Babylon 5 franchise, it didn't work. Better off with a decent five year run that had an extraordinary central narrative. Pay attention to the other things (movies, both failed spin-offs, The Lost Tales) if you'd like. They don't go anywhere particularly important or special. Babylon 5 is done for the time being.

Lochley story, 4 out 10. Sheridan story was B5 at it's near BEST, 8 out of 10. I wish they could do a CRUSADE: The Lost Tales, But I don't see that EVER happining!
I enjoyed both stories quite a bit. I never understood the hate for the Lochley episode.
