Axanar dropped a plot spoiler about a month ago

Just popping in to say that a couple of pages back, the subject of deaf fans came up from Melakon. I just discovered, via a post on the Axanar group, that Prelude is available close-captioned for the hearing impaired, which I take to be a rarity in online video generally. (Tangentially relevant since he was asking about podcasts, but an interesting factoid anyway.) Nice work, guys and gals. :techman:

Certainly good of them to do, yes. Though I don't think they're the first fan film to do this.
Project: Potemkin, for example, has offered their webisodes with subtitles for some time, as have others. I'm sure Barbreader could comment more authoritatively on this than I can.

"The Tressaurian Intersection" is closed captioned in English, Spanish, Portugeuse and German. :)

I'm not sure the distinction between subtitles and closed captioning. I believe closed captioning includes writing what sounds are there (such as 'sound of door slamming' or 'loud clap of thunder') which are not included in subtitles.

There are a lot of fan films with subtitles, and I try to list all the subtitles available as part of my listing for each fan film (as well as links to reviews.) I do not have a separate list of films subtitled in English.

I confess I have not made the distinction with regard to subtitles v. closed captioning. If there is one.

A lot of fan films do offer subtitles. One of the things I do is try to get even English language fan films to offer them in English, both for those who can't hear the film and also for a group of people who offer subtitles, the most active of whom is Ulisses who lives in Brazil and offers subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese. There are others about (you know who you are) who also offer subtitles, but produce them in lower quantities than Ulisses does.

Thanks for noticing! Our episodes are subtitled in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. I think several other fan films are as well.

Wait, so what the heck was the supposed spoiler this whole thread was originally about?

It's in the first post.

and I just caught it.

The narrator NEVER SAYS that the next generations heavy cruiser is being built around Axanar. He says Kharn's spys LEARN that the next generation heavy cruiser is being built around Axanar. Details matter.

in fact they say it two different times.

Looks like I was/may be at least partially right.

Ah shit, I meant the follow up spoiler. The one that the poster was all cagey about. Sorry. :alienblush:

I think it was the Robert April Bio blurb on the website, which implies that the Enterprise has already had it's shakedown cruise. So the Klingon having committed everything to an attack on the federation's newest shipyards might find the ship fully built and operational.

Now, personally, I'd be pretty surprised if this was the case. It would put Garth and the Ares, which are our story's hero's, on a back seat to April and the Enterprise. The blurb probably mentions his command of the enterprise because that's how most of us know of April.

They talk about that in Prelude. If the D-7 had been at their previous big brawl, it would have made short work of the Ares and her sister ships and supporting ships.

Finally away from the last few weeks' conversation, on Facebook yesterday was jointly announced by Alec Peters of Axanar prods and Star Trek: New Voyages that the previously-mentioned team-up\vignettes between the two are now officially a GO project, and if I read the announcement correctly, they plan to shoot the first one this fall at Retro Film studios in upper NY state.

Both vignettes are intended to bookend the main Axanar feature, but it is said one's storyline would have it take place roughly 6 months after the events of TOS episode ''Whom Gods Destroy''.

That sounds interesting.

the full press release:
(Valencia, CA) – Two major players in the universe of Star Trek fan films announced today that they will be collaborating on a pair of vignettes that form a bridge between the two respective shows. STAR TREK: NEW VOYAGES and AXANAR’s producers provided details on their upcoming collaboration to tell the story of Garth of Izar’s rehabilitation following the events of “Whom Gods Destroy” – an episode from season three of the original Star Trek television series produced in 1967. Alec Peters, Executive Producer of AXANAR and James Cawley, the Executive Producer of STAR TREK: NEW VOYAGES said the vignettes will explore the original storyline of Garth more deeply.
“The story takes place six months after the USS Enterprise first visited Elba II,” explained Peters. “Captain Kirk and his crew are tasked with bringing the now fully-recovered Fleet Captain Garth back to Star Fleet Command and Earth.”
“We explore the ramifications of what happened on Elba II and before. Garth has no memory of the last ten years, so we want to know how this affects a man like Garth,” Peters continued. “How does Kirk help his hero regain his footing?”
The two vignettes serve as bookends for the ground-breaking Star Trek fan film, AXANAR, which is currently in production and has caught the imagination of Trek fans worldwide.
“These shorter stories are set twenty-three years after AXANAR,” Peters said. “They tie our production in with “Whom Gods Destroy” to give Garth the full resolution he deserves. In order to do that, though, we knew we would need access to sets and a crew from the era of the original series and there are none better than the STAR TREK: NEW VOYAGES team.”
“We’re excited to have the AXANAR crew at our studio in our Ticonderoga (New York),” said James Cawley, widely recognized as a leading figure in the world of Star Trek fan films. “AXANAR started here in 2010 when I asked Alec to play Garth of Izar in an episode we were shooting , so we really feel like these are sister projects.” We have great friendship and deep respect for the Axanar Team and we are very excited to finally work together on what will be an amazing follow up to “Whom Gods Destroy”! I am positive that our fellow friends and fans will love this!
Echoing the positive statements from Cawley, Peters continued: “James is the most generous guy in Star Trek fan films. He’s opened his studio to us many times, but for a variety of reasons, we’ve never been able to take him up on his offer.
“So this time, when James called and asked if we wanted to shoot this fall, we jumped at the chance. Putting the NEW VOYAGES TOS-era sets and passionate crew of volunteers together with AXANAR’S award-winning director Robert Meyer Burnett (writer/director of FREE ENTERPRISE) and our director of photography Milton Santiago (PRELUDE TO AXANAR, AXANAR), gives both groups the chance to make something special and show how the fan film community can work together.”
Peters and Cawley reiterated the fact that Star Trek fans want more stories and more content and that by working together, AXANAR and STAR TREK: NEW VOYAGES can meet that demand. “Both productions work at a very high level,” continued Peters. “AXANAR has attracted a lot of attention recently and we think it’s important to work with other productions and share the spotlight with the entire fan film community.”
(how do i make spoiler tags?)

From the FAQ file:

"To make a spoiler code, use this format:
spoiler text which will be hidden--and then close the comment with same "
tag--but put a slash (/) right in front of the s but within the brackets.

As of the day before yesterday, we were planning on grabbing both vignettes at our shoot just after Hallowe'en.

Can't wait to see it!

BTW, my Prelude to Axanar Blu-ray and CD soundtrack arrived in the mail today. HOLY COW. The bar has truly been reset for independent Star Trek productions. The Blu-ray mastering and packaging is absolutely top-shelf. Marvelous stuff, guys!
