Aventine needs its own novels!!!

As much as I like the concept of Aventine, I do like S&S's current approach to having specific brands like TNG, DS9, Titan, NF, etc. plus "event" books like Destiny where Aventine could always be a prominent feature with the Enterprise, etc.

Instead of doing a series based on Aventine, why not an anthology based series centering around different ships? Call it "Ships of the Line" and focus on a different ship with each book, or just collections of short stories involving different ships.

The Anthology of Cameo Federation Starships. I'd love Kelvin, Grissom, Saratoga, Columbia, Spock's USS Surak from the old comics and Styles-Excelsior stories.

i'd like the TNG Hood, the Gloucester from Vanguard, the T'kumbra, the TOS Excalibur, the TOS Defiant, the Equinox before it got lost and the Sugihara from SCE.

oh, and Shran's Kumari.

I'd also like a 'Ships of the Line' anthology of stories. It'd be cool to shine a light on lesser known ships.

Plus there could be a SCE story too!

It seems to me that if you were going to call the anthology Ships of the Line, then the whole thing should be stories based on images from the calendars of that name. It used to be fairly common in SF magazines and comics for editors to commission stories based on artworks they'd already done -- we saw this recreated in "Far Beyond the Stars." And of course that's part of how Destiny came about. It could be a nice writing challenge.

I personally wouldn't want to limit it to what's been in the calendars.
Agreed. Most of what has been in the calendars (with a few notable exceptions) are just the hero ships is battles or flying in space.

I haven't seen this year's one yet, so I don't know how different 2011's pictures are.

^Well, I'd assume it's those notable exceptions that the writers would gravitate toward. (But I call dibs on the ringship!)

I think an anthology focusing on different ships and crews would be cool, so long as none of the stories were about any of the following:

Any ship named Enterprise
NX-02 Columbia
Sulu's Excelsior
Defiant (DS9's version)
Voyager
Stargazer
Any ship captained by Calhoun or Shelby
USS da Vinci

Basically I'd want all new ships and all new crews (or at least the less common one-off ships from the various shows)

^Was that in response to my post? Because, from what I see of The Brave and the Bold (I haven't read that), that would be the exact opposite of what I would want.

The Brave and the Bold was basically focusing on the incidentals as the hero ships (so like the USS Hood as the main ship) and the "hero ship" as the incidental ship to the story.
