Aventine needs its own novels!!!

In this case...Ezri and Julian have been apart for far too long. It's damaging them inside--as that "dinner" scene in ZSG indicated.

Indeed, that scene made it quite clear. Although, "dinner"might be a bit pushing it.

I really disagree. If anything, that dinner showed how different they've both become. All of the Dax/Bashir interactions in ZSG were awkward.

I was aiming for "It's damaging them inside", but no matter. You have a good point. Their problem is simple. They blame each other. The way i see it (it been a while since WODS9 though), Ezri thinks Julian is in love with her just because of the Dax simbiont and she feels like the "next best thing". Complicated matter, but i can see her point. Julian on the other hand is pissed because Ezri is pissed. Claiming her arguments are total bullshit.

Unless they get past that. Without clearing the air so to speak, even if it takes the mother of all arguments, they wont even be able to work side by side, not to mention getting together again.

I'm going to go ahead and say no. The crew is just not strong enough to support its own series, especially Dax and Bowers. After ZSG, I've grown to flat out hate Dax and Bowers is a non-entity. The rest of the crew is dull.

While I wouldn't say that I hated Dax in ZSG, I have to agree. I liked ZSG as a whole, but the Aventine parts were definitely the less enjoyable parts of it for me.

Personally, I feel a Aventine series wouldn't add anyting to the Trek Universe. I like how it is right now, have them pop up every now and then in other books.
As a side note, I posted this in another topic somewhere on the forum, I really don't like this new Ezri. Ever since she transfered to command early in the DS9 relaunch, she became a bit of a bitchy person. Commenting a lot on Bashir and what he was doing, her inner dialogue sometimes gave me the feeling she felt superior to others.

And Aventine would need a hell of angle as a series to set itself apart from others. Titan did this by going to a format like TOS: one ship, one crew, out there. From what I've gathered sofar about Vanguard (having read it yet, should get the series in next week ;)) it also has an angle to make it unique. Just like TNG, DS9 and Voyager had for TV.

No interest in Aventine at all, complete waste of the Dax character to have her interacting with a crew of nobodies. I have no problem with new characters but I prefer each series to have a base of TV series characters. Plus what would the Aventine actually do - Titan has staked out its own position in the franchise by being the exploring ship but what stories could you really tell with the Aventine that you can't do with another series?

Given that the recent books have indicated that we have lost yet more characters from DS9 I'd rather there was more focus on the exisiting series and getting them working again rather than starting up yet another series.

I think part of the problem is that Bowers, Helkara, Tarses, Kedair, Mirren, and Leishman do need the increased characterization that a novel series would bring.

Hmm, now that SCE/CoE seems either dead or in stasis, how 'bout an Aventine series of e-novellas? Same style as SCE; loosely-connected episodic adventures backed by ongoing character development.

In fact, with Aventine as a test-bed, it'd be perfect to take over SCE/CoE's "thing" of being about new technology and creative problem-solving (every Trek line needs a "thing," I feel, to make it distinct from the other lines --if Aventine was just another long-range explorer/scout, it wouldn't be any different from Titan).

Fully agreed!!
With so many fans wanting more of DS9, especially The Missing Years between The Soul Key and Destiny, I'd much rather see TPTB putting their energy into that then a new series.

Although I like the newer classes of Starship and have no problem with Dax being in command of the Aventine, I actually don't like the idea behind the Aventine. I really wish that the Slipstream drive was never introduced. It's too much of a "quantum leap" ahead of warp drive.

I know that there will always be breakthroughs and I know the argument that the 24th Century just seemed to static—yes there had been advancements, but it was still just basically the 23rd century tech without some of the rough edges. However, slipstream just seems a little too magical for my tastes. The galaxy is a BIG place. It shouldn't be easy or quick to get from one side of the galaxy to the other.

I don't really have another idea or solution to the quandary of how to open up new ways of exploration and new storylines, but Slipstream just leaves me with a bit of a bad taste.

That being said, I'd prefer that Aventine remain a "bit" player—showing up now and then in a supporting role.

Yeah, but the books aren't entirely at fault for slipstream, it was introduced in Voyager.

IRL Slipstream won't make one iota of difference - Star Trek ships always move at the speed of plot. No exceptions. At least when Aventine visits Sha Ka Ree, there'll be less whining about the 20-minute journey!

This is true (and I didn't like it in Voyager either), but the books did run with it. Again, I don't necessarily have a good alternate idea. It is, though, hard to fault the authors for picking up the Slipstream idea.

You know, considering how that unfortunate re-write of her character, from someone wanting to set herself apart from her previous hosts to someone who threw herself into her past hosts like Jadzia did--

(which always struck me as the writers in general wishing Jadzia had never died, so tried to bring her back in Ezri)

--I can't help but wonder if that "attitude" she displays is simply evidence of her "channeling" Jadzia, Curzon--and a little bit of Joran....

[shameless_plug](BTW...I made this implication a central element in my earlier Ezri tales in the fanfic forum....)[/shameless_plug]

[SNIP!]

Second this.

I have no problem with Slipstreams use in Destiny seeing as it being flown by a Caeliar enhanced Hernandez. It's its use afterward that bothers me. In Destiny, it's supposed to still be experimental. And yet, within two months, Starfleet's already kitted out a small fleet with QSD. You'd think they'd spend a little more time testing it for bugs and flaws before even thinking of refitting the fleet for it

IIRC Starfleet knows how unstable slipstream is, but they also know that they have to start using it now and get the kinks worked out on the fly.

Something about territorial expansion and such like, it's covered in ZSG

Thanks to B'Elanna Torres and her benamite recrystallization matrix slipstream should really be a lot more stable for use within Starfleet vessel's. That and improved deflectors that can assist in keeping the phase variant more stable should also make the use of slipstream viable.

And I can see why it would it would seem a little much to sum to be able to go almost anywhere in the galaxy. But really the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta quadrant's seemed a bit confined. I look forward to seeing parts of those quadrant's not covered by DS9 and Voyager.

is the vanguard station still in operation by this time in the 24th century ?

currently reading greater than the sum

I doubt it very much. I don't think there are any ships or anything from early TOS left still in operation. And if there is a station in the Taurus Reach, I doubt it is in any way similar to Starbase 47.

You think there're gonna build insanely huge space stations and then retire them in less than a century? What a waste that would be. Especially for a Starfleet that still employs Excelsior, Miranda and Oberth-class starships at the end of the 24th century, and still uses the STIII mushroom spacedock design.

One thing I loved about the (otherwise stunningly dull) TNG novel Sins of Commission was that one of Franz Joseph's TOS scout-class ships was still in use a few decades prior to TNG. With the techhnology of the future, I'd expect more starships with a lifespan akin to the Klingon D7/K'tinga (225+ years, from "Unexpected" to "Way of the Warrior"), rather than the quickly forgotten NX-class (retired in 10 years, yet still spacewothly 100 years later in "E2")
