Australian floods worsen

We're okay where we are in Brisbane (and we shouldn't be in any danger thankfully - just wet and soggy) though I think all but 1 road out of ours and surrounding suburbs are all flooded over.

The in-laws were warned to evacuate where they are on the Sunshine Coast but they are already cut off so it was too late - they are okay where they live at the moment but the only way they'll be able to get out if it gets worse will be by helicopter.

Flood peak in Brissie is supposed to be on Thursday.

good to know you are ok lady c.
:)

Good to see you, Lady C, and good to know you're okay. Hope your in-laws will be unscathed by all this. :bolian:

It might be worth pointing out too that more people died driving on the roads over the Christmas-New Year period than have died in these floods so far. Let's keep things in perspective.
I saw (and have a screenshot of) your first post in this thread, before you had the sense to edit it. You're in no position to lecture anyone about "perspective".

The number of people missing has been revised downward, which is something. Not much, but something. The devastation is unbelievable. Seeing people on TV, hearing them on radio speaking about their experiences is awful. :(

I hope those affected by flood and bushfires in WA won't be forgotten in all this.

Glad everyone's okay.

On the news, it currently says 12 dead and 51 missing. Some heartbreaking stories, too.

I just heard that there are worries about Ross River Fever and Dengue Fever outbreaks.

^^ I'm glad your niece got away. I hope nothing happens to her house.

I'm glad you're safe, too, Lady Conqueror.

I found this image on twitter, of the Wally Lewis statue in front of Suncorp Stadium. Classic Australia humour. For those Wally Lewis is considered as best of Queensland's best rugby league in the last 40 years or so, and dominating many games in State Of Origin.

My niece's home is not far from the Suncorp Stadium. I believe the stadium's field is now covered by muddy water.

That's awesome.

I just read this on AOL News:

Tens of thousands of homes are in danger as muddy floodwaters swamp Australia's third-largest city, ripping buildings from Brisbane's riverbanks and launching debris like missiles across surging water. A dozen people are dead and scores missing.

Five children are among the latest casualties in suburban Toowoomba, where what one local official called an "inland tsunami" tore through the Lockyer Valley en route to Brisbane, The New York Times reported. Several Toowoomba residents interviewed by AOL News on the telephone Tuesday were unreachable today, as phone and electricity lines went down in the floods. Their whereabouts and safety are unknown.

I hate being on the other side of the world and not knowing what's going on. I hope everyone's safe. :(

It seems that most of the missing are from the village of Grantham. It is thought that many bodies will be found in the pileup under the railway bridge there.

The good news is that river peaked at 4.5m, and not the predicted 5.5 metres. They say the river has dropped down to 4.2m.

I decided I should really make an effort to put all our family photos up on Flickr so that if anything bad ever happens I will not lose them.

I was going through an old photo album that I got off Mum and found 6 small photos of the 1950 Goondiwindi Floods. In that year Goondiwindi was flooded 3 times over a five week period.

The man in the boat is my Uncle Bill.

This is the bowling green where a 2lb Jew fish was caught.

^ Nice idea by storing the photos online. Might do something similar for a lot of mum's photos (or just make a digital copy of them)

It seems a 14th person has died, with a 24 year old man found in floodwaters when checking his father's home.
