Australian floods worsen

I'm hoping my brother's place on the Sunshine Coast hasn't been affected by this, but as he's away at the moment there's no easy way to tell.

The whole thing is horrific. :(

They should design cars to be amphibious so that little floods like that won't write off a $50,000 piece of equipment

This page on facebook might help or checking one of the local newspapers online.

So true. I have a cousin that lives in Brisbane, and several old high school friends. Plus a friend lives in Toowoomba.

Ive got family in Toowoomba. Heartbreaking. Latest news is that Victoria is close to being placed on flood alert either today or tomorrow. Torrential rain is expected in the Western and Eastern regions of the state.

Amazing video of the flood. Found this on twitter.

Oh my god! I'm actually more concerned for the people filming in that video!

From the look of the video they were on a first or second floor. There are many videos on youtube. I've seen many on my FB wall

Death told now is 13 in Toowoomba. Yet to hear what has happened in Brisbane, it's surrounding suburbs or Ipswich.

Also more evaculations in northern NSW. The rain should ease tomorrow, with some sunshine on Thursday.

I don't know if it's been posted before ... cars being washed away in Toowoomba. Witness nature in all her fury.

According to the Age, the Brisbane River has broken its banks here and there, but the bigger problem is that CBD workers are panicking and evacuating the city, which is causing traffic problems everywhere. People should be calm, organised and prepared in times of emergency. Clogging up the Storey Bridge could well be a recipe for disaster with the river rising.

That said some officials have come up and said that high tide will soon be over and that the river will recede somewhat.

I know a couple people in Australia. Last time I was able to get a reply from one, he was still homeless and somtimes living in his car. I can't help but wonder if he's all right.

Official death toll is nine.

My brother, sister and their families live on the Sunshine Coast. Last I heard they're okay. I'll phone my Dad tonight, he lives on waterfront at Tweed Heads but for some reason it never floods there.

Apparently part of the problem was storms usually pass over in 15 minutes, this one parked above Toowoomba for an hour and just dumped torrential rain.

And goodness knows what it'll mean when the water west of the mountains gets into the river systems and heads south, there'll be more flooding all the way to South Australia for the rest of the year.

If you're interested, you can watch the rainfall live on the Bureau of Meteorology radar:

It's already crossed over the border into Tenterfield and looks like it will reach Grafton by tomorrow night.

Is it wrong that when I read the headline "Most of Queensland a disaster zone" I mentally added "and in weather news..."?

^^ Yeah, definitely.

This is all horrible. I hope no more people are killed. :(

^^ Doesn't surprise me, seeing how most of the Australian nutjobs I know always seem to come from either Cairns or Townsville ...

I thought about joining up with the SES a few months back. If I had done I imagine I could well have been deployed up there now. Instead I'm stuck down here with only my warped sense of humour to keep me company.

Hey. As a former resident of Townsville, I ain't a nutjob, nor are many of my friends from there.

Also Brisbane is preparing for the worst floods in 118 years. They expect the river to continue to rise until Thursday.

Fun fact: Queensland is where convicts who re-offended after arriving in Australia were sent.

Of course, then the Germans arrived. ;)

Hey guys, I'm no saint myself, but would it be possible to kind of lay off a bit on the "Australians from certain regions are mostly nutjobs" thing? You know, since there are people here who are worrying about the safety of their friends and families in the affected flood regions there? Just a polite request.
