Australian floods worsen

We're okay where we are in Brisbane (and we shouldn't be in any danger thankfully - just wet and soggy) though I think all but 1 road out of ours and surrounding suburbs are all flooded over.

The in-laws were warned to evacuate where they are on the Sunshine Coast but they are already cut off so it was too late - they are okay where they live at the moment but the only way they'll be able to get out if it gets worse will be by helicopter.

Flood peak in Brissie is supposed to be on Thursday.

Hey guys, I'm no saint myself, but would it be possible to kind of lay off a bit on the "Australians from certain regions are mostly nutjobs" thing? You know, since there are people here who are worrying about the safety of their friends and families in the affected flood regions there? Just a polite request.

Did anybody make a similar request in the shooting thread? :borg:

Not here and not now, tharp.

Your concern is touching.

Anyhow...
An hour ago I read somewhere around 73 people were still missing.

Anybody in Australia can say how affected internet connection might be in mild/heavily affected areas?

That is true, but neither Townsville or Cairns are in this flood zone. A few friends of mine who all still live in Townsville, have posted warnings about flooding for Cairns, and some smaller towns around north Queensland, but they were cancelled a hour after the warning was announced.

It's mostly South East Queensland and northern part of New South Wales that affected by these floods. Hope your friends are okay J.

I'm quite glad I've seen that my cousin and a few old high school friends are okay at the moment, but the worse is yet to come.

And finally thank goodness for facebook and twitter. Without either of these wouldn't see the human side to this discaster.

Thanks. They live in Brisbane and in Sidney, and I'm not certain what's going on around there.

I'm also glad to hear your friends and family are okay, and here's hoping everyone gets through it all safely.

Brisbane is the city in most danger over the next day or two. This page from the Queensland Government has the most information or links to them. The amount of water that is flowing through the Brisbane River is around 2 times the size of Sydney Harbour, and that is per day. Also can look at the Courier Mail website or Brisbane Times website, as both of these are the major newspapers in Brisbane.

And on Sydney - there is no flood alert there. I'm quite that this disaster won't come that far south. Hope both of your friends are okay.

Unfortunately most of the 20 million people in Pakistan affected by flooding this year are too poor to demonstrate their humanity.

Best wishes to all the Australian posters here. Hopefully most of you guys won't be seriously affected by the flooding.

Rang my Dad. He's okay, as I expected, so's the rest of my tribe.

It should be pointed out that South East Qld and North East NSW have one of the highest population concentrations in Australia. It's a bit like Florida with all the seniors and the intense tourism, as well as good farming country inland also affected.

They built a dam to try and counter flooding after the 1974 floods, which were bad. The dam is now at 190% capacity, and they have to release water back into the rivers.

Droughts and flooding rains. Her beauty and her terror.

I just saw the news awhile ago about all this terrible flooding in Australia .It was terrible to see all the devastation. And people trying to rescue other trapped in the floodwaters. It's so sad and tragic.

I was able to get ahold of my friend in Sydney. He's alright. I'm trying to call up my friend in Brisbane. She's always on the go so it's hard to get in contact, but I'm hoping to hear from her soon.

Edit: She's okay, which is a relief. I hope everyone gets through this safely.

My God, I can't believe how horrible that flooding is. The video shows two guys standing in waist-high water. Are they nuts?

I believe those two guys were trying to reach a guy who had been in one of the guys. The guy was swept away but I heard he managed to grab a tree (or maybe a pole) and was rescued.

I think you see it the moments preceding in the video in the first moments of the video on this page.

I am still waiting to hear from my sister about my niece. She did send a text saying she was safe. However it now looks like there is a chance that her house will be flooded.

Upto 90 people now missing.

The Brisbane River is expected to peak tomorrow at 4.00am (Brisbane time) at 5.5metres.

Apparently Brisvegans have been panicking and hitting Coles, Wollies hard. Why? Didn't they know there was a flood coming? (yes they did) Why did they wait until the last minute to 'stock up'?? I hate to think what would happen if this sort of thing were to happen in Melbourne (mass hysteria) or Sydney (rioting, shooting, anarchy)

Honestly, if you know a flood is coming, you don't go to work anyway and then panic at lunchtime, raid the supermarkets and then get caught out in the traffic clusterfuck

It might be worth pointing out too that more people died driving on the roads over the Christmas-New Year period than have died in these floods so far. Let's keep things in perspective.

I have talked to my sister and find out exactly what has happened to my niece, Ailie.

Her partner, is trapped in Toowoomba where his parents live. I hadn't even remembered that his family lived there. His family is OK.

Of course, he can't get back to Brisbane and he has the couple's car. My poor niece was left home alone.

My niece spent last night moving valuable things upstairs to the higher floor. A friend of her boyfriend helped her do this.

This morning she rang up my sister saying that water was flooding into the street and that it was up to the top of the letterbox. My sister told her to get out. She packed her swag and grabbed the two dogs and left via the backdoor as the backyard was free of water. She had to climb over fences, and even break a couple of fences to get through. She has made to to a friend's house which is outside the danger zone.

My other niece's husband tried to get through to help Ailie both last night and again this morning but the roads are all blocked off.

PS - my sister said that Ailie's house is a Queenslander meaning the flood has to be quite high before it actually enters the house.

PS - my sister has phoned my cousin Jack in Texas and he seems to think that that town isn't any real danger. Not sure about Goondiwindi.
