Atlantis Found?

I can see why it was only an hour long. They didn't have much, but I do think they are on to something. The underwater stuff didn't impress me (reminds me of something similar off the coast of Japan), but the evidence for a buried city is strong. Atlantis is still Crete as far as I'm concerned, though; nothing much here to convince me otherwise yet.

I doubt it's create, too many inconsistencies. For one thing, the Minoans survived the eruption of Thera. The shape is all wrong too.

^^ Some survived, but their civilization pretty much collapsed, and there was a large diaspora.

Actually, the civilization did recover afterwards. There was a time of rebuilding and such but it did persist for centuries after that. It wasn't the overnight end of a civilization that was described by Plato. That fits better with Santorini or even the new found site. Apparently Plato also described the journey time to Atlantis. This doesn't fit Crete either, nor Santorini.

Who knows. I loved Crete when I was there, and Santorini too. I always like the idea that Atlantis was around there. But, not all of the puzzle pieces fit.

Well, Plato also got the time frame wrong. He got his information from Egypt, so there may have been some misunderstanding or they may have had parts of the story wrong. Since the Minoan civilization never recovered to its former glory, they may have considered it destroyed or simply exaggerated for dramatic effect.

Whether it's Atlantis or not, it looks like they're on to a really good find.

Meh. I've started watchiung this and I'm very unconvinced. Maybe Tarshish, but I'm still sure that:
Thera was the centre of the Minoan thalassocracy;
if so, it is an island surrounded by a circle of islands (cf. Cyclades);
it had very advanced architecture for the day;
it did sink in a day.

These guys seem a bit obsessed about proving their theory right above all others (apparently a common trait among archaeologists and their egos), and it's hard to trust Freund with his dark glasses on all the time. Someone should tell people that dark glasses in a TV interview means looking shifty.

That one guy reminds me of the guy they have on the UFO shows all the time-- a bit too much demented eagerness. :rommie:

Chap called Charles Pellegrino. He's an archaeologist, rocket scientist, deep sea explorer, and Trek novelist. Wrote a book called Unearthing Atlantis, gave the topic a very thorough going over. Mentions how crazy archaeologists are about anyone dissing their theories. His book is the basis for the novel I'm writing about Bronze Age Greece/Aegean (now 18 years in the making, folks!). I do a lot of my own research, but that book was the kickoff point, and I can't recommend it highly enough for people interested in the subject. And its sequel, Return to Sodom and Gomorrah: Bible Stores for Archaeologists.

With all the various possible Atlantis sites, what would constitute definitive proof that a given site was indeed Atlantis?

A sign that said 'Atlantis. Pop 12,311. Twinned with Amarna. A Rotary Tidy Town'.

Seriously, I don't know if any answer could be found. It's unlikely there will be anything that says Atlantis or a word like it. The sites that have been found do fit pretty well with Plato's description, which is a little generic.

Perhaps there needs to be some kind of independent body that doesn't have a vested interest in pushing their case forward. It would make an interesting documentary, to bring all the different options together, and for those who believe to clearly and concisely state their case.
