Article on Trek vs Wolverine Box Office

When FC managed that there wasn't anywhere near the level of internet usage and piracy and though everyone had a video, DVD's were still a year or so away from the first units and discs going on sale, so very few people had high-quality setups that could compete with cinemas.

Nowdays things have changed somewhat. Most people just wait for the DVD to come out, or in alot of cases, the pirated divx copy downloaded off the internet.

I loved the first 2 X-Men movies, but X-3 was easily the worst movie I have ever seen in a movie theater.

This Wolverine looks the same way. But I don't think it will compete too much with Trek. I think everyone that wants to see it will see it opening weekend, leaving little left over for Trek to compete with.

Really? I thought X3 was at least as good as X1 though not on par with X2. IMO the worst movie I ever saw in a movie theater was Insurrection followed closely by Batman & Robin, Serenity, Alien Resurrection and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. X3 ain't even a bleep on my radar.

None of those, bad as some of them are, get anywhere near my list of "worsts," and Serenity certainly was a great deal better than any of the Star Wars prequels. Talk about braindead wastes of time and money...

From Box Office Mojo:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/

Movie tickets sold (in the US & Canada) in 1996: 1.339 billion
Movie tickets sold (in the US & Canada) in 2008: 1.341 billion

So, really, the total number of people going to the movies is about the same today as it was when First Contact came out. (Granted, that audience is now spread out amongst a slightly larger number of movies, but that's not an enormous factor.)

There's the Spirit....:techman:

WE keep this up, it might actually make it to $200 Million !!! :rommie:
You must have missed the point of me being sarcastic?!?!?:rolleyes:

If that were true, then it seems to work in both directions...

I've seen a few 'not-so-legal' versions of new movies and I have to say that they ALL sucked in some way-shape-or-form, as far as Quality goes.

I'm not much of a Theater goer, but occasionally I will Trek out for something that seems worthy of the BIG SCREEN...

And even though IMHO, TPTB are changing things too much, this movie appears to be worthy enough for me. :)

One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?

Well I am a little picky about what I see in the theater. I have certainly seen worse movies than X3, but X3 is the worse I have paid 8 bucks to see :)

Those other movies are not great, but even the mention of X3 brings to mind the midnight showing where I could tell the movie was going to suck as the opening music began...;)

But anyway, I would really be shocked if Wolverine out grosses Trek when all is said and done. But maybe i am just naive...

I'll top all of y'all for bad movie:
The Scarlet Letter with Demi Moore.

I should have left the theatre when I saw the beginning credit "Freely Adapted From The Novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne".

This struck me as funny:

How did "Wolverine" claw its way to such a commanding early lead? By not making a direct play to its comic-book-loving "fanboy" base...

...Paramount, by comparison, elected to focus its early efforts on re-energizing the older, core "Trekkie" fanbase before firing up a more mainstream effort aimed at convincing younger moviegoers that "This is not your father's 'Star Trek,'" as its current TV ad campaign says.

So basically, some fans around here have been insisting ever since Paramount passed up that 2008 Comic-Con presentation that the studio has been making a big mistake by taking the fans for granted. Ad Age and Marketcast are saying they wasted time and money by courting us unnecessarily.

One of the virtues of the home video revolution was saving money on likely stinkers by (at most) renting them for two bucks instead of shelling out for tickets.

Worst Movie Of The 1980s (in the category of "non-musical"): They Live
Worst Movie of The 1980s (musical): Stayin' Alive

At this rate all I want is it to make at least enough for a sequel. I think dreams of a massive 250 mil+ type of return are not very realistic looking at tracking. But come on, make at least 150 mil 'Trek!

Honestly, even if the movie made $50 mil opening weekend. I am pretty sure that would be the largest opening ever for a trek film right?

Yeah, but the Enterprise she'll have to have really strong legs if that happens.

You guys should hope this isn't the case. If Star Trek doesn't rake in the cash opening weekend, the franchise to toast.

They Live! is a classic!
