Art Asylum Enterprise-D Model

Wow..great job with the windows. I'd planned on painting some of them white, but I doubt I'm brave enough to paint the ones on the neck of the star drive section..lol! It looks great though!

Hey Peeps

 Yay! Picked up my DST Enterprise 1701-D today - WOW!!!!

I love it! Everything about this ship is awesome!!! Even the neck issue pales into almost non-existence, now that I have one in the flesh to admire...

I love the saucer separation sounds - I love the lights, the sounds, the deflector dish, the magnets (which are so massively powerful!!!).

Overall - stupendous!!!!!! Awe-inspiring!!! Wonderful!!!!!

:techman:

Thanks for the replies, pureTREKKER, Stevie, NIUPonyBoy and BolianAdmiral!

While I did like the look of the ship out of the box, I'm a picky person and decided it was worth the risk to modify it. Some things didn't work* but overall I think it looks a bit nicer.

For the most part, I just used a white "paint pen" and some old pentel black ink pens for the windows. Around the neck, I used the lines as a guide and drew the windows in based on a bunch of screencaps I found. I didn't notice at first, but the ink didn't dry on the surface and I ended up with smudges everywhere...I covered them up with the white pen, which is why there are so many and they're so small ~_-. I also did other things, like paint around the deflector as light was shining through the sides of the rectangular part.

I decided to paint the escape pods with a grey paint pen as well. The yellow was too bright and took away from the brightness of the "lit" windows:

As you can see, I'm using the smaller stand now. The ship fell off the big one a bunch of times (even after super gluing the peg in place), and the last time, the peg broke off INSIDE the ship - I had to drill a hole in the battery compartment to get it out! I contacted AA about getting another one - if I don't hear from them I'm gonna make my own.

*I painted over the bridge area so the light wouldn't show through (except through the bubble dome) but the paint was so thick that the area lost all detail...I undid that and just painted the dome white. I also tried painting the arboretum windows white and ran a light blue highlighter over that, but it looked too crummy and cheap. Not a big loss.

PS - I'm still not done with the ship. I'm gonna go over the remaining neck lines with the grey pen and maybe some other things ~_-

I can not believe how awesome this ship is. It really is the best that Art Asylum has offered yet. I'd love to see what they do with Voyager!!

The size, weight and overall look is awesome, as is the lighting of the nacelles and deflector, but I do have a couple of problems.

I'm a little peeved that they didn't paint the windows on the side of the secondary hull. I would've thought they'd recall them all and correct that error, but I can live with it. (if anyone has a good technique to put the windows on themselves, I'd love to try it).

My problem is, I've now had two of these ships over the last 3 days and they're both faulty! The first one had a HUGE plastic 'bubble' underneath the engineering section. It was melted on and had become a part of the ship, so I took it back to the store for a replacement. I got it home, checked it out and all looked well. It looked awesome, until I looked again and realised that the right side of the saucer section is totally warped (no pun intended). The two sides of the saucer wont even connect together. I can see the inner workings!

I'm returning it to the store again tomorrow to replace it (which is kinda embarassing), but I'm now worried about what will be wrong with the next one.

A GREAT model by Art Asylum, but these problems have dissapointed me. Anyone else suffered with a warped saucer section? (again, no pun intended..lol!)

yea the saucer and the engineering section does not connect all the way, one of the pieces of the saucer section broke yesterday. But it still connects.

These look fantastic. If you're looking for one in the New England area; most Newbury Comics locations seem to have them.

The electronics in mine crapped out so I had to break off one of the engines and mail it back... I am now waiting on a replacement... Since my original one had a bad paint job on the front saucer windows I guess in all it's a good thing, here's hoping the paint job on the next one is better.

"Qaulity Control" is a business practice that is supposed to keep so many bad untis from reaching market, yet we see many complaints in this thread. Put that with the lack of dorsal windows, just equals shoddy crafstmanship and care on AA's part. Which is a shame since these could have been really fantastic models.

These models are pretty big. So I have to ask; how do most of you display these? On a shelf? In your office? On your desk?

As much as I'd like one, I'm just not sure where I'd put it.

I finally, after much deliberation, bought one of these. And I must say... even with the missing windows... she is beautiful. I does have a few issues but I am willing to overlook certain things to have the E-D represented in my ship collection. I have wanted her for several years now and hated the Playmates version. And I was so disappointed when Bandai discontinued their snap together line of ships. Most of them (with the exception of the E-E) looked fantastic. And the details were amazing. I thought they really could have done something fantastic with the Galaxy class. They probably would have included the subtle aztecing and the windows would have lit up. But it wasn't meant to be so I will have to settle for this one. Don't get me wrong, I don't think I really settled. DS did a nice job for the most part. My only real grips are a couple of odd paint issues and some light bleed on the underside of the saucer.

And did anyone else have trouble separating the saucer? I tried to be gentle and ease it apart but I practically had to wrestle it to the floor to get her apart! Those are some strong magnets! :rommie: But I did figure out really quickly that I needed to put my hand between the two pieces when I put them back together. The first time I did it, the stardrive leaped up five inches off the table to meet the saucer. They slammed together really hard too. I was terrified I had broken the damn thing.

And mine is displayed on some shelves with the rest of my ships. I would put it on my desk but it is already covered in Transformers, GI Joes and the action figures from the new Star Trek movie.

Oh and one last thing... I got mine on sale for $29 through Amazon. It was a steal.

Well, I bought one 1701-D. Loved it. Now I bought a second one, so I can display the 1701-D connected and with separated saucer section.I was never too fond of toy ship models, either because of the visual quality or the size. But this model has the right size and visual quality (doesn't appear as a toy).So if you ever wanted to have the 1701-D at your home, so you can watch the ship from every angle you want: This is the thing to buy.

I'm a little peeved that they didn't paint the windows on the side of the secondary hull. I would've thought they'd recall them all and correct that error, but I can live with it.
It wouldn't surprise me if the reason behind the missing windows are licensing issues - maybe the license was cheaper if the model isn't an exact replica but has a significant change to the original. Leaving all the windows on the neck out would be such a change that could have made it much cheaper to make the model of the 1701-D.Maybe the AGT-Version has a different change to the original model, but this time not the windows on the neck?

Its not licensing issues... This issue was answered in the Art Asylum Q & A dated August 24th 2009.. They say they will provide a decal sheet for the neck section.. >>> http://www.artasylum.com/blog/2009/08/askdst-51-star-trek-edition/

What happened with the (reg) Enterprise-D neck windows… Or lack there of??? The (AGT) Enterprise-D has neck Windows. No Neck Windows are present on (Reg) version http://www.flickr.com/photos/gls_3rd/3614965183/ Neck windows are present on (AGT) version http://www.flickr.com/photos/gls_3rd/3614965993/in/photostream/

DSTChuck: Eric, there was an error in production as the line shifted over to run the regular version, so what we’ve done is created a decal sheet that a fan can apply if they want. We’ll just need them to send in a SASE and we’ll send one right out. Look for the news to shop up on the DST site very soon.

Geez. Why don't they switch the run for he next batch to the AGT version? Why make us PAY for stickers that over time will start to come off?

They got to have kept the molds and comptuer design files for the AGT version.

I doubt 44 cents is going to break me so I will be happy to send for the decals. Actually, I am glad they are making an effort at all. I didn't expect anything really.

Yeah... I doubt the decal would cost much.. Better than nothing and I'm sure once pasted on the neck, the Ent-D will look so much better.... Here's hoping they have the decal sheet soon!
