Spoilers Arrow - Season 4

Rutina was unrecognisable on Hannibal a couple nights back, without what she thought was a southern accent, and endless swearing.

Awesome! I wonder how they will handle the story from Constatine's show. Even if it's not a full on continuation, I hope they can at least work in a reference to Zed or some other aspect of the series.

The article says that Ryan is only returning to the role for "an episode" of Arrow. I certainly hope that he appears more than that.

I'm hoping for appearances by Zed eventually, because Angelica Celaya is one of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen. Hopefully the first appearance of Constantine will be well enough received to lead to more appearances and more incorporation of characters and ideas from the show.

In any case, it's kind of remarkable that this is happening at all -- not only a character from a cancelled show being revived on another, but that show (presumably) being retroactively placed in continuity with another. Those are things that don't often happen. The former has happened before, for instance with Detective Munch moving from Homicide to Law & Order: SVU. And the latter happened after a fashion when Static Shock crossed over with the DCAU Batman in its second-season premiere (after previously treating Clark Kent as a fictional character in the show's first season). But "rescuing" the lead character from a failed, cancelled show by bringing him into a successful show is not something that has any precedents I can think of. Although there may well be something I'm forgetting.

Hmmm.

I wonder if Arrow'll crossover with Lucifer as well at some point?

Hopefully, it won't be after the shows cancellation.

It will be interesting to see what kind of supernatural menace requires Constantine to show up. His appearance also opens the door for other magic characters to appear.

Constantine's appearance will deal with the fallout of Sara's return from the dead.

"Unlike Thea, who wasn’t fully dead, the consequences of using the pit on someone as dead as Sara was creates some unforeseen difficulties...and John Constantine is uniquely suited to help our team deal with those."

And again they say this is a one time only deal, but this seems like a lot of effort being put into a one time deal...

"This is something the fans were clamoring for," agrees Guggenheim, praising DC for being so "magnanimous and generous in giving us this one-time dispensation." In addition, since two share a studio (Warner Bros.), Arrow has been able to secure not just the original actor, but his original outfits, as well. "The trench coat, the tie, the shirt...the whole wardrobe is being taken out for storage and shipped up to Vancouver." John Badham, who was a director on Constantine, is also on board to helm the episode. "He is familiar with Constantine and Matt Ryan, so it’s a wonderful combination," Guggenheim says.

I doubt Warner Bros. and DC are going to say 'no' if Guggenheim and Co. want to use Constantine - or other characters/actors from the show - again in the future - even if this is being treated as a 'one-shot' deal right now - especially if the character's appearance is well-received.

I hope you're right.

Anyway, it's cool that they're using a director who worked on Constantine and knows the character, and that they're actually reusing his costumes. It sounds like they're committed to making it authentic. Although I doubt there will be much in the way of references to story points or characters from Constantine itself.

The fact that Marc Guggenheim said this - "Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired. The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to bring John Constantine to Arrow and the CW’s DC universe. It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series.” - leads me to believe that there's a better chance of getting a reference or two to the NBC series - even if it's vague - than might be expected given the currently one-shot nature of the character's guest spot on the show.

Maybe it'll turn out that "the Rising Darkness" was actually Damien Darhk all along?
