Arise, SIR PATRICK STEWART!

^But... what about all the times he's saved the Earth from Borg and Romulans and Magneto? Doesn't he deserve recognition for that?? ;)

^Although since he's actually been the king of England (more than once, not to mention the king of Scotland and the king of Denmark), isn't he a bit overqualified?

He's Patrick Stewart. He was overqualified from the day he was born.

Congrats, Sir Patrick. :techman:

It's worth noting, for our American cousins, and those Brits who have no idea, that the Queen does not formulate the lists of Honours - note the correct spelling. It is, in fact, down to the Prime Minister and th government - the same PM whose sons said that the UK needed Optimus Prime to lead it out of financial disaster. (If he's a Tory, I agree with them.) Now, seeing as Stewart is a die hard Labour supporter - a party which is in government and is currently trying to bankrupt the UK - it seems more likely that the knighthood is to do with party support than acting ability. Either that or Brown's sons are also Trek fans.

The final decision might be the PM's to make, but the original nominations are made by ordinary people. The bestowing of an honour is rarely politically motivated.

Good grief, why are some people so determined to be negative about everything? Come on, people! It's Patrick Stewart and he's becoming a knight! That's just intrinsically cool. Why take all the fun out of it?

Cuz he's French, that's why!

That's a thoroughly cynical article, unsurprisingly for the Torygraph. It's as if a Conservative government never granted a knighthood to one of their supporters...

I'm not knocking Patrick Stewart, I just don't understand the whole "knight" thing. It's not like they give him a horse and armor and he patrols the streets at knight saving damsels in distress.

I guess it's a British thing...sort of like how the "Prince" part of Prince Charles means Jack Squat.

Well, it means he owns the Principality of Wales, and is next in line to the throne.

I don't see the problem. The honours system is just a nice way of recognising the contribution of various people to society.

Get with the times! They don't give out horses nowadays! He'll get a Hummer instead! A bright orange one. And instead of patrolling the streets at night saving damsels in distress, he'll run over hoodies that are mugging old ladies.

It's all in the smallprint of the Knights of the Realm Vehicular Licensing Act 1991 and the Knights Amendment Act 2004 (s.3). Check for yourself if you want proof. I'll wait. ;)
