While I'm not convinced of the necessity, I feel that it looked pretty good. I think they managed to design an NCC-1701 reimagined as part of the NX-01's lineage.

I'm less a fan of the obvious cynical manipulation on display in putting this ship (and the theme) as the closing sight and sounds, but taken on their own merits both homages were well-done.

Never have been a ship nerd, so didn't really give a shit about what the Enterprise looked like in terms of canon or continuity or whatever. That said...it still looks purty and I have it as my new wallpaper. Previously it was Discovery herself.

Warning, not that high res (credit to Fortyseven at the Star Trek Reddit):

I really liked it. I agree the shots didn't look quite as clear as I was hoping for, nor show the ship as "gracefully", but I think it (IMO) was a very good compromise between the two main groups of people and how much change over a 1960s ship was warranted for a 2017/18 show.

It really screams ENT to me, those engines, the riveted-plates finish and all. And this would be an orgastically good "predecessor stage" to the refit that brings the ship to the TOS standard, if not for the two bumps on the road: us all having seen "The Cage", and the very-close-to-explicit idea that the ship was originally built as late as 2245 (or even the older-fan-favorite 2220).

I'm satisfied they kept the size, making it explicit with all the portholes in their usual places. The flattering shot with her closer and the hero ship farther from the camera also eases in the fact that both ships have the same number of decks and really are the same size, even if the Discovery has that size spread out into twice the length and about twice the width with big holes in between.

Not satisfied yet - I want to see Pike in his chair first. But there's a definite upside to this: who remembers the plot of the episode now?

Why? What's wrong with the original? And don't give me that lame excuse about it not being cool enough. They recyled a forty year old design for their main ship. But jesus, what is with the way they light space shots? So damn shiny. It's obnoxious to look at. Give me clean space shots of ships. Their redesign is not as awful as I'd feared, but why even show the Enterprise if you're going to change everything?

Pretty much perfect, in my view. Updated enough to fit in, but classic enough to capture the essence of the original. Without any dialogue, you knew beyond doubt this was the Enterprise.

That whole sequence got a proper fanboy reaction from me, something Discovery hasn't managed since that scene in the pilot where Burnham went out exploring in the SpockSuit.

As opposed to all these "earned" moments?

Ah yes. Shows that had much more respect for the spirit of Trek and the source material than STD does. Good times.

And the Spock example was definitely earned, they literally spent an episode setting him up before he appeared at the end.

Let's be real here, the Enterprise cameo came out of nowhere and was desperately used as a cliffhanger to create buzz for the series. In it's execution, it was definitely the most desperate example of fanservice I've seen on Trek.

On the one hand, I'd have much preferred to see the real, original Enterprise design. It was recreated beautifully and effectively on screen for DS9 and ENT, and could've been done again.

On the other hand, if the people behind this show were convinced that they "needed" to update the ship, this is just about as good a result as I could've hoped for. It could've been much, much worse. It retains most of what made the Trek design aesthetic work in the first place, which is more than can be said for a lot of the designs in this show.
