Are You Handy? 2

Good luck. :bolian:

Glad to hear that Shimmy is using his house. For no doubt innocent purposes.

It's a ghastly morning of cold fog and drizzle and the Shimster is outside for the day, so I'm sure he'll be "enjoying himself" in the cathouse all day

There is nothing more irritating than sanding off clouds and clouds of base coat IN YOUR LIVING ROOM  :klingon: I covered everything in sheets of linen first, of course, but that stuff gets everywhere. Two more skim coats and we're ready to prime/paint and that might begin tonight because we really want to be ahead of that by Saturday. Also I should have my camera cord this evening so I can show off our recent laborz :)

We've made a lot of changes to our flat, especially the bathroom... now I wish we'd taken some before shots!

Yeah, it's cool to have the before and after on film. Another advantage is that when you bring something down to bare bones, if you ever need to, you can see "inside." Plus, it just makes a great scrapbook of all the hard work you did way back when :)

Finally getting these up, starting with the bare pine floor. Everything went conveniently out on the deck and then I ripped off the last of the existing floor moulding

then we laid down 2 rolls of padding (we gambled we had enough from the last bedroom and saved a few bucks)

and finally the carpet gets laid in

This was all pretty easy and the Porter Cable made the moulding a snap. I have still yet to replace all the outlets but I hope to get that tomorrow. Man there is nothing like brand new carpet after a winter's worth of cold pine floor :D

There is a special place in hell for people who cover hardwood flooring with carpet, SPOCKED. :vulcan:

You don't know cold piggies until you've lived like I do, which is a cement slab that's in need of carpet.

Thanks, ancientone :)

As I mentioned in the Layoff thread, I recently found out that as of March 1st, I'm losing my overtime hours which is a hit of almost $400 per month. (I am right now active with them in "negotiation" about it, but for now I'll assume it's gone.) So our addition plans are on hold, sadly. Meanwhile, we're going to focus on the renovations and put whatever money and resources we currently have there.

^^ Ouch. Sorry to hear about the lost income. :( I, too, know the pinch of a smaller paycheck-- I'm fortunate that in my case it mostly means that I'm not saving for retirement currently. I hope your negotiations prove fruitful, at least to some degree.

As for the pictures, all I can say is: [worf]Nice house. Good work.[/worf] :bolian:

Here's a little update on the current work in progress. Today we started priming and painting the accent wall behind which is the new closet

^ primed

^ welcome to three coats of California Poppy - :D

we've waited a long time to finally see it

the outlet covers and vent cover will be in place tomorrow after this fully dries.

^opposite angle. we have to replace the electrical box in the middle of the wall with a closed metal box before we can patch and paint over it and that will hopefully happen next week.

Tomorrow we'll be hanging the closet door and painting the above (facing closet) wall in the matching brown. We really like this bright, new color in the living room :)

I like the choice in color too. A few accents like that can make a real difference when you're holed up in the winter time.

So we did the few touch ups this morning and spent a little of the afternoon finally hanging the closet door...

^ we aluminum-taped the fan and ducting together; it isn't too pretty because we had to crimp the end of the ducting into the fan, but later I'm going to box it in to just a little over the tape line and then stuff it tight with some extra insulation. the fan itself has been shimmed tight into place so it won't get moved around. since we had the pellet stove running today, I went in the basement and gave the fan a test ride and yes indeed it pulled down some warm, ceiling-level air.

^ the long awaited connection between the fan and vent elbow happened today!!!

^ clean, new vent cover on the opposite side

^ I laid down an example of the floor molding just so you can see what it will look like once I get my finish nailer up here again. new outlets and covers... AWESOME :D

^ and finally the closet door got hung. this wall needs to get painted to match the rest of the living room and we still have to install the door knob, and the interior ducting will get hugged tight to the corner (it's easily manipulated) and then some high corner shelves will get mounted, floor molding, some hooks for coats, and there should still be enough room for the vacuum cleaner and extra bathroom towels :)
