Are You a Fan of The Big Bang Theory?

Well, they definitely reference Marvel heroes like Thor and the Hulk (and Stan Lee) on occasion, but mostly in dialogue. If you check out the set dressing, almost all of the posters and action figures hanging on the walls are DC-related, unless perhaps the script specifically calls for a "Thor" reference or something?

Although I suppose that might just be because all the DC paraphernalia is easier and cheaper for the show to acquire. "Call the guys over at DC and tell them to send us a couple free crates of comics and toys and stuff that we can use to dress the set."

Why pay for Marvel gear when you own DC? (As it happens, the DC offices are just across the street from the Warner Bros. lot where BBT is filmed. It's a short walk.)

Yeah, I'd say that's what it's about. It's definitely not that they never mention non-dc stuff, it's just that 90% of what they actually show is DC - the only Marvel stuff I remember making it onscreen was Sheldon's Incredible Hulk Hands and Howard's Iron Man helmet.

Anyway, as to the show, I really enjoy it. Though - am I the only one who's really disappointed about the shortened episode lengths this season? The writing is back up on par with the old high points of the series, yet none of the episodes feel finished anymore. There's just not enough story left...

1. This thread is in the wrong forum.

2. Will one of these "Do you like" threads ever include a poll?

I don't like. In theory I like Sheldon's character, but in practice this is just another painfully unfunny American sitcom.

I am reminded of the scene in American Splendor (movie; haven't read the comic) where the main character is made literally speechless with rage by the guy who thinks "Revenge of the Nerds" shows that nerds are now accepted by mainstream society; who doesn't realise that they're just being exploited by Hollywood for comedy value.

I have a love/hate relationship with it. I only started watching it because my wife likes it, but I begrudgingly came around to liking more if it than I disliked.

There are plenty of things about it that I dislike - Howards casual racism towards Raj* and Bernadette's disdane for anything that Howard likes (oh, lets get rid of your TARDIS to make room for my ideas...lets tear apart your childhood home because I say so) to name but two - but it's Sheldon and Leonard & Penny that keep me watching and laughing.

*I've never understood the whole "we are so good friends that I can take the piss out of you relentlessly and it's okay" thing. Surely friends are friends because they WON'T take the piss out of you? Here it's one sided too, as Raj has noted many times that he doesn't like it, yet Howard keeps making the occasionaly India/Indian "joke" of the kind that became frowned on in the UK back in the 80s.

Not every friendship and not every form of display of affection is the same.

While that's true, I think there's a difference between ribbing ones friends in a light hearted manner and being nasty, and Howard comes across as the latter to me, partly due to him ignoring Raj when he's protested it.

I saw one episode - it was as funny as lung cancer.

2 things.

1) It's not a good idea to judge an entire series just by one episode.

2) Cancer is a serious thing, it'll never be funny to make jokes with it, until a cure is found and maybe not even then.

Although people in my family have had cancer and died of cancer, I'm okay with making jokes about it and others doing so. Humour is just another way we cope.

Hollywood exploits everyone for comedy purposes.

Yeah. That's pretty much what all sitcoms are, whether it's about hillbillies, rednecks, rich yuppies, working class folk, sports fans, high fashion people or whatever else...

As a counter-example I present SPACED, a comedy based in geek culture that wasn't just "dur, geeks are weird haw haw".
Never got that feeling from TBB and I fully expected to when I heard about it. Tried Spaced a while back but couldn't get into it. .

Cancer is a serious thing, but that doesn't mean that you can't make jokes about it. The subject of a joke is not the joke.

And besides, this wasn't a joke about cancer by ANY stretch of the imagination. It was a joke about how unfunny JoeZhang found TBBT.

I thought the first few seasons were good but then as it gained real mainstream traction it changed, Amy's character became radically different for example, as did Sheldon's. It's a bit like scrubs for me, started out great, then lost its way after season 3/4.

And yeah I realise that makes me sound like a sitcom hipster.

I enjoyed the first season. I enjoyed each following season less and less until I stopped watching it.

I'd agree that Spaced was better.

The original reason I started to watch it was for the Trek references and guest stars. Over time it has become less interesting, for whatever reason.
