Are there any good reasons to not want to be in the Federation?

After that hacking incident Data should have been removed from the Enterprise entirely.
I'm still not sure how hacking Data is fundamentally different from the rest of the crew falling under alien possession or what-not?

Though, do you think Picard should have been removed from command after BoBW?

Because Data by himself can do the job of dozens of other people at the same time.

Like in "Brothers"... something like that would have taken a minimum of half a dozen people working in perfect synchronicity with a prearranged plan. Data did it by himself... on the fly.

Just remove him from the chain of command and two factor authorization for lock out commands.

That said, it's a concerning security breach. Especially with what "The Game" reveals about a shit down ability.

Another good reason from a planet's POV might be if they wish to operate/govern in such a way that Federation oversight would not allow, but for altruistic rather than criminal motives. Off the books and backroom deals to accomplish goals the Federation might support, using methods the UFP doesn't sanction.

I'd say ever since TOS it hasbeen a problem.
Unknown entities taking over Starfleet ships seems to be a problem that hasn't been solved well into the 25th century!

Definitely.

Well into the 32nd, since the Emerald Chain seized Discovery with relative ease, and they didn't even have the crew cooperating with them for the most part.

I have watched all of DSC just once, the only episode I repeat is the last 30 secs of the series premiere cuz that scene is cool.
Honestly can't remember much about Emerald Chain or DSC S3 onwards.

The problem is that TNG did it right in "Power Play" and "Rascals" with Riker (I believe both times) locking out command functions as soon as it was clear that there was an imminent danger of the main bridge being compromised.

Which is how it should work, really. Don't let the enemy gain control of your ship!

But this isn't the real future, this is the future of television drama, where if the enemy simply can't gain control of the ship then it's one potential avenue of drama cut off.

Which makes him very dangerous

Well, "acting first officer Ensign Sylvia Tilly" was clearly and obviously setting up Discovery to be taken over down the line. At least it seemed so to me at the time. Also, consider that at this point in the timeline, Emerald Chain technology and scientific resources outreached that of the Federation.
