Are the majority of male fans of TOS chauvinists?

I don't consider myself a chauvinist, but if a hot green-haired girl walks across the screen in a tin-foil bikini... I ain't lookin' away. ;)

The truth is today, men or young men are more impolite, more sexist....than ever.

I love the miniskirts but hate:

 The sexist "woman on the bridge," "female yeoman" horseshit.

I think all the Star Trek series are sexist, to one degree or another.

What's wrong with being sexy?

One thing I find interesting about TOS is the fact that the show had women serving aboard a starship. This was during the 60s. At a time when women couldn't serve on an actual Navy ship. I think we saw this on "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" as well. Today, the Navy is a lot more co-ed and you can find many women serving on an Aircraft carrier. And yet, we still do not allow women to fight on the frontline. TOS was 40 years ahead of its time.

You know perfectly well I never said there was anything wrong with being sexy. :p

Go read the rest of what I said in my posts.

You never saw This Is Spinal Tap? Rent that movie immediately!

^ Ack. The 1980's really are my blindspot. :o

Looks to me like it's a cool movie.

I'm a little worn out after the Turnabout Intruder thread, but I say something. I don't get the impression TOS fans are chauvinists. The show was, but not the fans. At least not compared to fans of any other show. I see "bitch" and "slut" directed to female characters on the other boards too.

I ask this because compared to other show threads, when topics of gender come up, the male posters tend to like things status quo--meaning they like how women were portrayed in TOS--or their attitudes seem backwards when they see how women are portrayed in the latter ST shows. Yes, despite what a lot of female fans say, they're totally fine how things are..."its really too bad that ST had to change....it would all have been perfect if they kept those whiz bang colors and smooth lines on starships and the women weren't allowed to be captains, and they all made good multicolored girlfriends for Kirk..." Sometimes I'm really sad to be a TOS fan...

Huh?

The thread on "Turnabout Intruder" is a good example of why this thread's answer is more or less "no." In that thread, the argument basically came down between those who interpret the epiosde to mean that Starfleet did not permit women to command starships and those who interpret it simply to mean that Janice Lester was insane. It should be noted that no one in that thread argued that it was a good idea to bar women from command--indeed, those of us who intepret the episode to mean women could not command starships are usually the ones who find the sexism in TOS (as a product of a sexist society) to be most regrettable. Indeed, I think it is safe to say that everyone who posted in that thread agreed that the idea that women would be barred from command is moronic and offensive.

When I saw the episode for the first time, I thought Janice Lester was saying that Kirk's world of commanding a starship had no room for a committed relationship.

A lot of people do.

Anyway, you should have seen what Roddenberry had her smelling in the first draft. It wasn't a glove, I can tell you that.

Agreed. As said before one must consider TOS in social context. With that in mind, it becomes very valuable. When watching those cringe-worthy moments one ought to remember that if Star Trek was progressive the rest of the society was probably much worse. Then one can consider his response of disgust at the characters and realize how far we have come since 1966!

Do we have any high-ranking females in the Navy or the other armed forces today? There isn't a cut-off point in rank, is there?

Brutal, Max,

Ah, we meet again, my worthy fellow debaters! Although you won't get much debate from me here on your sentiments.

My answer to the original poster's question is: I do see some chauvinism from members on this BBS in general, but I can't say the majority of TOS fans are chauvinist. I mean, Rama has a point when he mentions the love for the miniskirt but the hate for later ST series.

But not sure if this chauvinism is restricted to TOS fans. How many times have guys here joked that Counselor Troi should be known as Counselor Cleavage, or that Seven of Nine ought to be known as 37DD of Nine? (I must confess I've used both phrases in conversation--my bad).

And hey, as a big TOS fan, I've drooled over Uhura and the times her big red panties were peeking out from under her miniskirt.

Does that make me a chauvinist? Well, maybe a little. But as another poster mentioned, appreciating the female form doesn't automatically make someone a sexist, chauvinist pig.

Non sequitur. Your facts are uncoordinated.

I dislike Modern Trek because it's sucks horribly, not because I have some deepseated prejudice against women in positions of power.

I like TOS because it's a good show, not because the costumes are silly.
