Anything on Sela? [Minor Spoilers]

I think IDW's lead-in comic for the new Star Trek film will find Sela going back in time with Nero. Though their ship will be destroyed in the ensuing climactic battle, Sela will survive and go on in the alternative timeline to spawn many more decedents, who will also look like Denise Crosby, who will show up in all manner of crazy unexpected places.

GUARDS! SEIZE HIM!!

Late thought...would Tom be a viable Section 31 candidate?

Not at all.

Section 31's thing is Federation nationalism. These are people who believe, "My country, right or wrong," and in fact don't even care about right or wrong. It's "Federation: Period." Their guiding rule is what is best for the Federation.... which usually happens to also mean what is best for them, but to their delusional minds, it's about what's best for the UFP.

Tom Riker, on the other hand, was a member of the Maquis -- a separatist group that literally wanted to secede from the Federation and form their own government.

Equating Tom Riker with Section 31 would be like equating a Confederate soldier with a Bush Republican.

What is it with Alaskans and secession? ;)

All that snow's got 'em a bit cranky. ;)

I've got no problem with Tom Riker. Heck, I think it might've been cool if, in "Second Chances," they'd gone ahead with their idea to kill off Will Riker and have Tom take over at ops, with Data becoming first officer.

I always thought they should have had Tom Riker as a series regular on Voyager, especially since Frakes (at that time) was one of the TNG actors who reportedly would have been happy to have gone on doing TV Trek...that would have kept "our" Riker for the TNG films and still provided a friendly face (and, at the same time, a new character) for the then-new series.

And Sela's final stop on her tour through time is Turkana IV, where she hooks up with a human man and gives birth to Tasha Yar, thus completing the circle. Come on, you have to be able to get at least a trilogy out of a character who is her own grandmother. That's pathos, man!

There are racists among all parties. But neither party is racist, and both have a lot of good, accepting people even if you don't agree with all of their political stands.

I don't think Sci meant "Confederate soldier" to mean "racist," but "secessionist." The analogy was between Confederate and Maquis on the one hand and between Section 31 and the Bush administration on the other hand. The former are secessionists, the latter are secretive, manipulative groups that use patriotism as an excuse for their actions.

So much Sela hate. :(

I guess I'm the only person who loves Sela. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for a pointy-eared blond in a Romulan uniform.

For a minute there, I honestly thought you said "That's porthos, man!" and I couldn't figure out how a 22nd century Beagle came into this...

I don't see that. Romulan haircuts and uniforms are just so damn unflattering. How sexy can someone be with a mop on her head and a quilt wrapped around her torso?

Nope. I'm a Sela lover, and proud of it!! Personally, I think Denise Crosby looks better as a Romulan anyway. ;)

Sadly, judging by the negative reactions of the writers here, it doesn't look like we'll be seeing much of her anytime soon...

Two things to keep in mind: 1) Only some authors have said they don't think much of Sela. Three who've done quite a bit with the character--Michael Jan Friedman (Death in Winter), Peter David (Triangle: Imzadi II, Double or Nothing), and Bob Greenberger (The Romulan Stratagem) haven't said a word.

2) Disliking a character doesn't preclude having fun writing them. I hate Neelix, but I loved writing him in The Mirror-Scaled Serpent.

My view on Tom Rikers membership of the Maquis was that he was as committed to that cause as Tom Paris was.Which is to say,not too committed at all.Riker(2)was IMO ,"acting out" his frustrations(no need to list those here.)
Admittedly, the course he chose was immature and dangerous and hardly conforms to the Roddenberryesque ideal, but the episode exists and thus it's deemed to have "happened this way."We the audience are left to judge and through the auspices of Treklit, expand (or not) on these events.

As for 31,they are the ultimate pragmatists and will use any "asset",human or not to further their murky work.

Exactly. Thank you sir.

Maybe the analogy I should have used is "Browncoat vs. Parliamentary Operative" from Firefly/Serenity. ;)

To each their own. I've always loved those Romulan uniforms. Yes, I even love that wig. :p

*whew* I'm glad I'm not the only! :D

I suppose there's a certain martial appeal. Certainly, Milla Jovovich has shown that the pageboy haircut and chainmail is no obstacle to hotness, but then, Denise Crosby is no Milla Jovovich...
