ANYTHING can happen!!! Yeah. Right.

Along with the "anything can happen now, because it's a whole new timeline" stuff, I've also heard comments about how nobody remaining alive is even a sure thing.

Yeah.

Does anyone here actually think that after all the effort to recreate the Trek universe, populate it with the known characters, and so forth, that they'd go and KILL one of the majors in a later film?

I don't see it. Especially not at an early point in the run.

This nu-Trek has just gotten started. I just CAN'T see them killing anyone off. The deaths we've already seen? In one case we'd NEVER actually seen the character, and in another case we'd only seen them twice in about 30 years.

Somehow I don't think Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, or McCoy are going to be pushing up daisies after any of these films. Chekov might end up set on fire or something here and there, but he won't die.

Spock's death in ST2?

Yeah. That lasted, didn't it?

Besides, that was after there'd been YEARS of havnig him around.

These new guys? They're too new to kill off. I'd suspect CBS and Paramount would rather do a Saavik with one of them rather than kill the character off.

The Enterprise has its crew back, and I'd say they're staying.

Anything can happen? Yeah, but I'd say that excludes someone being killed...

...for good, anyway. ;)

I seriously doubt any of them will die, but the simple fact that we know they could die is enough.

I think these guys take chances. I hardly expected Vulcan to get destroyed or for Amanda Greyson to bite the dust, even though she is a tertiary character. I'd like to see someone important die in the sequel that you didn't expect (Scotty? Uhura? Checkov?) but have it resonate with the plot like Spock's sacrifice at the end of Star Trek II. I think that would be pretty interesting and provocative.

I think they should really have some fun and make Spock and McCoy gay lovers. If anyone needs to be dispatched, it's obviously Chekov, though Scotty could probably be replaced by some other form of comic relief . . . a CGI fellow a la Jar Jar Binks, perchance?

Well, I think they're all guaranteed to survive until the third film, anyway. After that, the contracts run out, right? Anyone is fair game.

None of them are canonically guaranteed a long and happy life. So, yeah, anything can happen.

I was always flabbergasted how Lost would build up characters and they would seemingly be core players and out of the blue BOOM, dead.

So, I am still on the anything can happen boat.

Anything can happen... as long as it doesn't involve a very large number of Vulcans.

Maybe Cupcake should be executed as punishment for blowing Keenser out an airlock in the next movie.

You know, it's funny, I thought Chekov was a goner given how little of him there was in the stuff leading up to the movie and Yelchin's nonchalant "There's so little to base a character on...he's comic relief...etc". He's right, but I thought here was one way they were really gonna change things. I'm glad they didn't though. Romulus, Vulcan, and Amanda were enough for the first movie in this new series. Though, given how relief-y Scotty is...I still wonder about Chekov's longevity.

As teacake said J.J. doesn't balk at killing off established (and even beloved) characters, in fact, there are times when I think he delights in doing so. So I'm gonna have to disagree with the OP and say: Yes, anything can happen, including the death of a major/core character. In fact, it's pretty damn likely.

Kill Chekov. He is the most obvious main character that could be and probably should be killed. You could kill Sulu, but I'm sure they would want to bust out with another sword fighting scene with him.

I think you're all getting carried away. Even Lost has built a core cast they will never kill off. Star Trek all the more has a central group of characters people care about, and JJ Abrams knows that. If anything they will have learned the lesson from GEN that killing off an important character just for the effect can become a hindrance for later stories you might want to tell.

Anything can happen...as long as it involves Lens Flares.

I dont think they will kill anyone off, at least not in the sequel anyway, much as i would like to see Simon Pegg removed from the cast. Plus they probably want to avoid the death threats for the time being. If people threatened to blow up R.A Salvatore after killing Chewbacca in a book, feth knows what they would do if one of the main characters died in Star Trek 2: The Search for More Money.

I'd be fine with them killing off Uhura. Or having her go through some sort of black hole and remerging as a different actress.

Going in any direction means there can be new adventures you tool.
Like they'd actually kill of a main character. Inagine the backlash.
