I don't think they would essentially plan killing off a character given the impact but if any actors was to become an impossible diva or just no sign again for any reason, they probably would. I don't think they would replace a major character.

Well, if done right there won't be that much backlash. Kirk may be the main character, but he's not as iconic as Spock.

I thought Chekov was a good character in this movie. Compared with every previous appearance in the series, this was the first time he was shown to be a competent and useful character in the story.

Scotty and Sulu are pretty useless in this new timeline, so I wouldn't mind seeing them knocked off.

Spock has already suffered too much abuse in this film. Killing off his girlfriend, too, would be a little over-the-top.

It would be funny if, in the next film, they pull a "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and have Admiral Pike take command of the ship again and demote Kirk back to first officer, in order to deal with the Doomsday Machine or something.
