Anyone here think the moon landings were faked?

Of course it wasn't faked. But it is fun to kick the "conspiracy" around to make fun of the lunatics who believe it.

My Dad's obsessed with the space program. I think watching the moon landings was the closest thing he's ever had to a religious experience. Sometimes I bring up the hoax with him just to play devil's advocate, thinking he might get the same enjoyment out of it I do. It's one of the few things that makes him furious. He knows I don't believe it but it's like even discussing the thing hypothetically just drives him blind with rage.

I guess I feel the same way as he does, I just enjoy ripping on morons more than he does.

I'm a little surprised and disappointed that we haven't had a real certifiable case in this thread yet.

Thinking of the moon landings makes me a little sad. I remember how, in the early months of 1969 how excited all us children were that we were going to see man walk on the moon for the first time. Sadly one of the girls in my class, Susan, died only a few weeks before the event. She was only 11 years old. I remember watching the moon walk and thinking it was unfair that Susan didn't live to see it.

To this very day I often think of Susan when I see the moon.

Thinking about the moon landings makes me sad in that we haven't been back since. I think the song Sleeping Satellite by Tasmin Archer said it best:

I blame you for the moonlit sky
and the dream that died
with the eagles' flight
I blame you for the moonlit nights
when I wonder why
are the seas still dry?
don't blame this sleeping satellite

Did we fly to the moon too soon
did we squander the chance
in the rush of the race
the reason we chase is lost in romance
and still we try
to justify the waste
for a taste of man's greatest adventure

I blame you for the moonlit sky
and the dream that died
with the eagles' flight
blame you for the moonlit nights
when I wonder why
are the seas still dry?
don't blame this sleeping satellite

have we lost what it takes to advance?
have we peaked too soon?
if the world is so green
then why does it scream under a blue moon
we wonder why
If the earth's sacrificed
for the price of it's greatest treasure

I blame you for the moonlit sky
and the dream that died
with the eagles' flight
blame you for the moonlit nights
when I wonder why
are the seas still dry?
don't blame this sleeping satellite

and when we shoot for the stars
what a giant step
have we got what it takes
to carry the weight of this concept
or pass it by like a shot in the dark
miss the mark with a sense of adventure

I blame you for the moonlit sky
and the dream that died
with the eagles' flight
blame you for the moonlit nights
when I wonder why
are the seas still dry?
don't blame this sleeping satellite

So, you like trolling people in real life.

Nice.

Why was MLK only "murdered" when the two Kennedy's were "assassinated"? Surely all three of them were assassinated as they were killed for politically motivated reasons?

Good point. I guess I used "murdered" because MLK Jr. wasn't actually in (or seeking) political office. But you're right, he was assassinated.

I find conspiracies fascinating as elaborate "what ifs," but they're just entertainment value for me. I'm really bothered sometimes by the things people actually believe. I have some relatives who are 9/11 "truthers" and I've watched some of their, uh, "material." It's all I can do not to bust out laughing when they're sitting there watching it all deadly serious.

The missions and landings were real...but what you saw on TV and in pictures was staged...to hide what really happened!

I know the feeling. I had a few friends who believed that crap and a whole mess of other weird stuff about Monsanto, the Illuminati, and the UN. I got so tired of explaining that house-fires could get hot enough to melt steel without any accelerant that I finally just parted ways.

Its too bad you don't have that option.

Does anyone else feel a strange absence in this thread? I know someone on this board is an Illuminati expert....

In general, conspiracists tend to go for convoluted explanations that make them feel important or empowered rather than the truth, which is often not empowering. It's like students who come up with all kinds of theories about why they didn't get a good grade--the professor doesn't like them, the professor is jealous of their scintillating intellect--instead of just coming to grips with the fact that they didn't study hard enough and didn't grasp the material.

I moved 700 miles away. Problem solved. ;)

I sometimes think the TrekBBSers are secretly pining for Moon landing CT's to naively wander in. I mean come on! Like anyone here isn't going to resist such tosh with every fibre of their being.

Anyway, Buzz Aldrin said it better than anyone.
