Anyone ever noticed

B'Elanna was left in command of the bridge in Tsunkatse. I can't think of a specific example for Tom at the moment, but I'm sure it happened at some point. At the very least, he was acting XO in Unimatrix Zero.

They had to give him something at least semi-interesting to do once in a while otherwise he'd be outshone by the bulkheads.

How many ambitious young officers did selfish Paris keep out of the drivers seat by hogging the controls?

I presume the chief engineer is a very busy person to be regularly on standby for bridge duty unless absolutely necessary and when it was, she was often burden with manning the warp core in battle. This just just my observation and opinion of course.

Plus all of the Chief Engineers were consummate micromanagers (except maybe Geordi). They do all the work, so their people don't have the confidence to manage on their own.
When O'Brien leaves the station, it falls apart. When Trip leaves the ship, the ship can't go as fast. When B'elanna goes on bridge duty, the engineer crew are so happy that they aren't getting yelled at, they slack off.

That didn't keep Scotty out of the Captain's chair when Kirk and Spock were off-ship or both incapacitated in some way (ie. "Journey to Babel"). And if Scotty needed to be in Engineering, he would turn command over to Sulu or whoever else was available on the Bridge (never Uhura, though, which was annoying).

I suppose the difference is, Voyager's top 3 were all on the Bridge. Tuvok was the 3rd in command, like Scotty. I think it was pretty rare for all three of them to ever be gone together. I think Paris came next, but both Paris and B'elanna were very low in rank.

In Enterprise, Tucker(Chief Engineer) was the 3rd in command behind Archer and T'Pol, and he sat in the big chair quite often. Reed sat in the chair a few times. I think Travis did once, and maybe Hoshi once.

Is anyone going to mention the ECH? Who needs rank when one is appointed command! Did Neelix ever have a sit down in the Captain's chair?

MORTIMER HARREN: I see you have an appreciation for multivariate analysis. Maybe you missed your calling. It's a shame. I imagine it gets tedious up at the helm.
PARIS: I enjoy the view.
(Paris returns to his comrades.)

If I were at the helm of a massive starship, I wouldn't leave either. :D

I enjoyed the big moment for Tom in 'The 37's' when he landed Voyager :bolian:
Indeed. Tom proves his skill many times over, but that one was a great example.

In the book "Violations", Tom is in charge of Voyager for a while when Chakotay is treated in sickbay and Janeway vistis a space station together with Tuvok.
