Anyone else disturbed by La Forges sexual harrasment of Leah Brahms?

If you'd read the thread you'd know most people have already agreed it wasn't sexual harrasment. But at least we're willing to discuss, rather than dismiss it.
I guess I don't see how it can be Harrassment when he never even did anything untoward to Leah Brahm.
Creepy maybe, Harrassment I don't see THAT at all.

Still inappropriate and unprofessional. If someone had made an android, or blow-up doll of your likeness and used it in ways that were offensive to you- I'm sure there would be some level of upset that you'd feel. I agree it was not harassment, but that doesn't mean that no harm was done. Free-speech and all that is still retrained by limits that cross over into what is considered slander and libelous speech.

Even today we have rules and laws regarding using someone else's likeness for your own purposes.

Yeah, it was the sense of entitlement that Geordi felt that, and shouted her down when she tried to explain how it made her feel.

I thought of it as Geordie doing something similar to self-inserts in fanfiction. He was his own Mary Sue. ;) A little strange around the edges but harmless.

That was the big problem I had with the episode and I've seen that happen in other series. Man does something dumb, the woman is understandably upset, man's point of view is explained while the woman's is glossed over and more often than not, she apologizes while he does not. I will admit that I'm not seeing that quite as much as I used to.

Yeah, Buffy did that with Xander way more than it should have.

The phrase "sexual harassment" has a definition in, for example, Human Resources parlance that includes more than just the word "harassment" does.

Also, I AM a special snowflake - unique, fragile, and beautiful in my own way, just like every other human. I'm sorry if this world has made you feel that that is not so about you to the point that you ridicule the notion, and I hope you begin to feel better about life.

And maybe Nicholas Brendon could have done with a little of what he might have learned if it hadn't.

This is what reminded me of the "nice guys" that are so common. Entitled guys who get all pissy when a woman isn't interested and then complain why women are awful and don't like them even though they're "nice guys".

Well, maybe they "get all pissy" after they listen to women declare that they are feminists and then hook up with some meathead who treats them like dirt? Just a thought.

Worf gets Jadzia and Troi. Geordi has to play wingman to Lt Broccoli on Friday nights if he wants to have a shot at getting to second base with a bunch of photons. There's a lesson in there somewhere fellas.

The "I'm a nice guy but women always pick the jerks over me" nonsense is also something entitled "nice guys" say a lot.

Not being an asshole doesn't entitle somebody to another person's romantic attention. And if it happens all the time guys like Geordi might want to question if they're really being nice.

I just think LaForge hit his head or something. Made him act up.

Maybe a visor feedback loop sizzled his brain just before she transported over.

Dunno.

Exactly. Treat people like the dirt they are and you will go far in life.

Nope, don't recall anything remotely stalkerish. Geordie's first encounter was somewhat accidental and would bring into play protocols we'll have to have for new technologies like this. Certainly, he never meant to interact with her in a romantic way. I think the computer did much too good a job this time, which is kind of departure from going around creating super AI space widgets of itself.

His second meeting was not accidental, but I believe he followed most of the usual protocols a male would usually use if he was attracted to someone with the obvious exception of occasionally blurting out a few things he shouldn't have known.

The biggest issue is a lack of communication, ie: He should have told her what happened right away and she would have possibly understood since she was an engineer, then she could have told him she was married and that would have been the end of it for
one of Geordi's infrequent forays into relationships.

The other thing is both episodes were very good, with Booby Trap being a favorite rewatch of mine, mainly because of the "lost race" angle, lost technology and a pretty neat puzzle to solve for Geordi, as well as more development for Picard. The second episode had a "space-dwelling organism", something we should have seen more on Trek, though the central tale was about Brahms and Geordi this time.

I think La forges treatment was stalker ish and would in most work places be considered sexual harrasment.

The hollodeck program itself was shocking but watching him perv over her and stalking her via her personal data? Yuk!

And at the end she appologised to him!

Hell he should of bern given a repramand and sent on a starfleet sexual harrasment course!

I presume I'm reading this right in that you're saying the exception is that he knew the things he shouldn't have, rather than blurting them out?

Yes, it's clear that Laforge had feelings for the real Brahms. That doesn't mean that he took the next step to have relations with a holographic representation of her.
I agree. holo-Leah's final lines are very suggestive, but after she says them Geordi immediately turns the program off and leaves.

When Geordi "shouts her down" she was not explaining how it made her feel. She was accusing him of progressively worse things, to the point where he had to defend himself. Prior to that, he only tried to explain what had happened, knowing how bad it looked. That said, he does end his little speech on a pathetic "I'm only guilty of trying to be your friend" but I fail to see how that should be considered a bad thing. Geordi may have been interested in Leah, but as far as I recall he doesn't push for anything romantic once it's clear that won't happen.

She was explaining that she felt violated, which is a serious accusation. Regardless of his intent, or even if she was justified, surely the very least he could/should have done is listen to what she had to say, rather than shouting back at her?

So. True.

This discussion is making me think of how well "Galaxy's Child" Geordi could fit in this recent SNL skit...

But Worf is hot and Geordi is not.

LOL
When I was in the Army the men in one of my units I was stationed in had peepholes through a painted window into our (women's)shower/bathroom.
It was asinine, boorish, piggish and disgusting and foul but not Harrassment.
