We may have dodged a bullet there. The whole thing sounds pretty bad.
.....
And here comes my biggest complaint about this reboot. Javier Grillo-Marxuach is a shipper. I have no problem with fans shipping characters, but if you give them the helm they're going to head full speed into the nearest rocks. Javeir's main ambition for this show was to tell a love story and cater to the hardcore fans who obsessed over Xena and Gabrielle rather than the mainstream audience. If he can't think of a single reason to bring the show back rather than to tell a love story then he clearly has no idea what made Xena such a good show.
I agree, this sounds bad.
Instead of a naïve farm girl, Gabrielle would begin the series as part of the nomadic Scythian tribe. By contrast, Xena would begin the pilot working alongside the villainous Hercules to complete his mythical twelve labors, the joke being that she was responsible for most of them and he was taking the credit. But after Hercules betrays her and leaves her for dead, Gabrielle nurses Xena back to health...
This doesn't sound like an evil warlord who has to spend the next 6 seasons atoning for her life. If anything it sounds like she's already trying to atone by helping "evil" Hercules out. And having Xena get "nursed back to health" by Gabrielle sounds too much like a romance novel.
I don't mind shipping, but as strange as it sounds, the Xena / Gabrielle "ship" lasted as long as it did because the romance wasn't the focus of every ep. I use this logic discussing star trek romances. As soon as Picard marries Crusher, the relationship is doomed (divorced in the same ep). As soon as Worf kisses Troi, the relationship is doomed (Troi dies in that ep). It takes a few seasons in DS9, but just look what happens to Worf and Jadzia.

Watching X&G's relationship unfold over the years was so affecting because they focused on the feeling behind the relationship more than the hormones. Xena wasn't horribly jealous every time someone sniffed around Gabrielle, so when she WAS jealous it was a sight to see.
I still think TPTB should just show us X&G at another intersection of their karmic cycles in another ancient time period.

Or a less ancient one.

Or 19th century one.

I'm not that picky.
