Any Fellow Stargate Fans Here?

Originally they announced that since it's going to be a while, they/d slowly let information out, so don't expect a lot of news and don't expect much major news.

Thread bump.

I've decided to watch the only Stargate series that I've never seen: Stargate Universe. Is there anything I need to try and watch beforehand?

Definitely a big STARGATE fan here.

They made a lot of memorable episodes. Great with overall internal continuity, too. (Probably helped that a lot of the writers worked on the shows for a long time.)

Great adventures, humor, and some good morality plays.

I might be in the minority, but I really liked SG-1 season 9 greatly. Much of it reminds of season 5, when the SGC was losing many allies to the hidden threat of Anubis. In season 9's case, it was to the Priors of the Ori. I liked how Mitchell was essentially an insert of us fans.

I liked season 10, as well, but I do agree it was definitely weaker overall than season 9.

As long as you remember the Lucian Alliance from SG-1, you should be good (they're a syndicate of pirates who took over a lot of Goa'uld ships and weapons after the System Lords were defeated; their most infamous scheme would be lacing a staple crop with drugs in order to get planets addicted to it so they could monopolize their food supply).

There are twenty-some web-based minisodes that take place across the first season (as was the style at the time), some between episodes, some within them. They're not essential, but they are interesting. There are also clips from an in-universe primer on the stargate program in the first episode; they actually filmed a whole set and included them as a DVD special feature, you can find that on YouTube, too.

My memory of what I've actually seen of SG-1 is spotty, so my next question would be "should I watch the 6 'Key Episodes' from SG-1 - per Gateworld - that feature the Lucian Alliance?"

Not really. There aren’t any characters that cross over or important plot arcs that cross from SG-1 to SGU. Like everything else in SGU, they’re a bit Darker and Grittier, so it might help to not have the specifics fresh in your mind.

I'm probably one of the only people in the world who prefers the SG-1 team from Seasons 9 and 10 that features Vala Mal Doran as either a guest or as a permanent fixture to the 'core' group from Seasons 1 through 8, and so even though everybody said that I could jump straight into SGU, I ultimately decided to do some 'prep work' anyway just so I'd have an excuse to reconnect with Cameron Mitchell, Daniel, T'ealc, Sam, and Vala while also getting an introduction to the Lucian Alliance along the way.

Gateworld(?) has put up a neat Stargate on-line trivia game. Be warned, it's deep-cut stuff, not, like, "What rank did Captain Carter have at the start of the show?" casual knowledge you'd pick up even if you watched the shows half-asleep twenty years ago.

Dial the Gate has a video with, I assume, all the details.
