Another small, old ship...

Got the deflector done, too...

and the shuttle bay...

and one more just because...

Have fun, everybody. that's it for me, today...

It looks a little bit like a toy in that the glow might be a little overdone and the parts that do glow don't actually look like they 'do' anything except glow. The deflector is more convincing to me, probably because I'm used to deflectors glowing like that. Perhaps if the glow was on the inside and we got the other parts creating shadows and interesting shapes on top of the light rather than just being bars of light themselves. I'm picky about my glowing stuff though; It tends to make the tech look like 'magic' if you're not careful.

I really like that idea. :bolian: It would give some visual interest and highlight the parts more. judexavier, were the internals supposed to be spinning or moving in any way? If so, you could always have some sort of faint electrical/magnetic/plasma interaction between the "blades" and the inner surface of the outer bubble to augment the internal lights. It could look like a brief wave of energy like the aura borealis. Nothing really bright or flashy. Just a subtle touch to give the idea of an energy field at work.

Wow, just got home, still haven't seen everything yet...
Yeah, that was the original scheme...very electrical/vacuum-tube-ish, almost "backlit" with the glows more internal (so many of the "guts" would be dark but shiny) very indirect, in that you couldn't really see the guts clearly..and yeah those "blade/spoon/rotor exotic bussard-warp-magnet":) things were intended to spin, like the TOS E effect...my colored sketches didn't really get the look I was going for :(
I like your description, though...that pretty much nails it!

Well, I don't think its the way the ship looks... I think it's more that they were talking about it being the first ship with warp drive, and was lost in space for quite a few years. In that case, why would it look so much like the Enterprise? It should look totally different...

Well, now that my surgery pains are down to a manageble level (I haven't taken any meds today :) ), I started back up on this guy. Apparently, the engineers found the "on" switch...

What do ya'll think?

Wonderful work, man. Even when you're recovering from surgery, you can still create and invent like this :)
Hope the recovery is going OK.

Threw this together as a brainstorm. Just the tip of the nacelles.

Oh nice!..I like that "ionized" glowing, with blues and reds blended together, and the backlit effect. Also the concave dish profile ...What did you create that in? Very nice.

hmm, I do like that. My main limitation is that I don't know how to get lighting effects like that out of Blender, so I'm going to keep what I have for now. :) If it were animated, those large glowing area's are definitely intended to spin... that would give it a much different effect. What software did you use to make that example?

Thanks. :) Everything's going great, as far I can tell. I just won't quit moving around so much...

Do you like the way the nacelle's turned out, or did you want me to tweak them some more? This is your ship, after all. :)

Its just a couple volumetric lights.
All done in LightWave 9.

^Is there an incidence angle gradient on the transparency and luminosity channels for the dome? It kind of looks like it.

So that would be the view and normal angle ramps in Blender, as shown here. It's a good place to start for an "energy field" look.

I always like how you experiment and evolve your projects, I'm just sitting back and watching:) One little thing, can you turn up the specularity(?) and refraction(?) in the glass dome material?
(sorry I'm using old Bryce terms, I have no idea how blender does these things). Sort of a glass bulb effect, that distorts what is inside...just as an experiment.

Can't wait to see what you do with the texturing.

Sure, I can do that. I'll try a few experiments with the lighting, too...
