It's important to keep in mind that, at least to my recollection, TNG's Enterprise-C represented the first screen-used Starfleet starship design to be designed and realized start-to-finish under "ship-of-the-week" constraints of time and money. Rick pointed out earlier in this thread that the producers seemed hesitant to build a new filming miniature of any kind for the episode. The "simplifications" to the Ambassador were a budgetary necessity.
I like the on-screen version of the Ambassador very much, design constraints or no. Having said that, Probert's version is very cool, and I've been visiting his web site multiple times each day to check for updates. (Yes, I'm a geek, but I guess that's obvious.
