Andy Probert releases prelim plans for USS Ambassador kit!

Re: Andy Probert releases prelim plans for USS Ambassador ki

It's important to keep in mind that, at least to my recollection, TNG's Enterprise-C represented the first screen-used Starfleet starship design to be designed and realized start-to-finish under "ship-of-the-week" constraints of time and money. Rick pointed out earlier in this thread that the producers seemed hesitant to build a new filming miniature of any kind for the episode. The "simplifications" to the Ambassador were a budgetary necessity.

I like the on-screen version of the Ambassador very much, design constraints or no. Having said that, Probert's version is very cool, and I've been visiting his web site multiple times each day to check for updates. (Yes, I'm a geek, but I guess that's obvious.)

Stargazer?

It was like pulling hen's teeth to get TPTB to authorize a Stargazer model; the initial plan was to go with a Constitution class and make that the Stargazer, until certain wize men (Rick? Andrew? Mike Okuda?) made a nuisance of themselves pointing out the model in Picard's ready room.

I'll let those who were there elaborate. ;)

Just watch the eps. You can see the dubbing of the class name. The line on set was constitution class... that's why they went with constellation, because it was close enough to connie as to not be as noticeable.

We have an update! The nacelles are more finished, and the engineering hull continues to take shape.

Would you please post an ilustration of the latest updates

As much as I like Sternbach's Ambassador-class ship, I have to say that Probert's design is just gorgeous. And it does provide a much better evolution from Excelsior -> Ambassador -> Galaxy.

Of course, in real life, the overall shape of different generations of technology does not smoothly 'evolve' from one form to another. If your current design has shape A, and you consider shape C to be interesting, why would you need an intermediate design B?

Of course, you could explain the shape of the Ambassador and Galaxy as being dictated by the imaginary dynamics of warp fields for ships that size. The Constitution class might be small enough for the effects to be insignificant, but larger ship designs may have increasingly had to take it into account, culminating in the 'short' Enterprise-D. Mr. Probert's Ambassador and Galaxy could then each represent an optimal 'shape' at their respective sizes.

Hey, what happened to the bridge module graphic?

Probert replaces the image file with a new one each time he updates the model. :)

And knowing that is half the battle!

I can say no more on the subject of "painting versus model."

He's absolutely nailed it.

Re: Andy Probert releases prelim plans for USS Ambassador ki

Looking very good. It will be nice when he starts fleshing out the secondary hull :D

Re: Andy Probert releases prelim plans for USS Ambassador ki

Hey, everyone,... I'm soliciting a general preference between the 'A' option and 'B'. Me, I always prefer a simpler solution but a lot of you like more 'stuff'. Let me know what you think LOOKS better, A or B.

The WIP

Thanks, Andrew-

Between the two options, I prefer option B, with the smoother "coil things."
