Andy Dick Ruins Message in a Bottle

I can for the most part separate an actor's role and him as a person when I watch something starring them. Unless it's OJ Simpson is the Naked Gun or Jane Fonda n anything then I can't.

Doesn't bother me at all.

Someones off stage antics and transgressions don't affect my veiw of them when onscreen and in character. I can easily distinguish Andy Dick the person from the characters he plays.

Much like Michael Jackson. Even though it's popular opinion and belief that he is molesting children, it doesn't change the fact that he's made good enjoyable music in the past.

Doesn't bother me either. If I don't like their antics I simply wont watch them. Doesn't have anything to do with the silly notion of separating the actor from the role.

I'm not going to support behaviors that I don't agree with. Dick is a jerk and I have no desire to watch his performances.

^^Give me a break, Gertch . ;) It's not silly, it's just a concept you don't subscribe too.

Just agree to disagree.

My bad, my friend. ;)

Because of reason you just described, is why sometimes I can't tell if people are being sarcastic or serious.

Message in a Bottle was alright. Andy Dick was popular back then in News Radio...I think. It's only recently that within the last year that I've heard about his agitating pain in the ass trouble making ways...then again I really don't know if it's all true. Anyway that's Hollywood in general...still a good episode though.

Like another poster said ...I too kind of cringe when I see OJ in a Naked Gun movie...his very appearance just reminds me of things I don't want to think about...ya know, kind of gives me the douchchills.

Dick is just a stand up comic, not an actor-he simply can't rise to it. Message was a good epi w/ or w/out Dick. Still someone to replace Dick might have made this episode come out better.

Being British I'd never heard of Andy Dick before I saw the ep so I have no coloured opinion on his performance, I just thought it was quite camp and a strange choice for an EMH frankly.

Andy Dick ruins lots of things.
Yeah, i agree with that statement.

However, I think he's fine in Message because he is almost a polar opposite to the Doctor. Just kind of reinforces the idea of just how obsolete the typical Mark I is back in the Federation. It's an idea that was used later when the Doctor was sent to examine Zimmerman.

It just makes the story more rewarding when the supposedly obsolete Doctor helps save the Prometheus and Zimmerman's life.

Actually, it's a very good episode, and he does a great job in it. I don't care whether he is or was popular or unpopular, as far as I'm concerned he does just fine in "Message in a Bottle".

Also, blaming him for Phil Hartman's death is stupid. Hartman's wife is the one who killed him, and no matter how much of a "Dick" he is, I'm sure Andy wouldn't have brought drugs into that situation if he'd known that it [maybe, allegedly] would have had the result that it did.

I used to think Dick ruined it, too, and was never that fond of the episode, but I like it now as a comedic romp, appreciate the Picardo-Dick repartee, and admire the integration of the sentimental themes, esp at the end.

I think that's why I like some of the old B/Ws on tv/movies, mainly because it's easier to suspend disbelief when the faces aren't so familiar.

If Joe Moviestar is on every other channel for something, I find it harder to believe.

I'd never heard of him until I saw the episode, and his performance is probably the thing I most dislike about "Message in a Bottle". He's just...annoying. Very much so.

I didnt really mind him in the episode. I thought it was entertaining to have the Doctor rolling his eyes at the annoying EMH instead of the rest of the crew. Irony.
