And the Next Cancelled Show is...

I doubt it's anything that sinister. Jon Stewart lasted as long as he did and no one "got him."

Whatever happened to the scottish guy? He used to have a show as well and I forgot his name? The one that had a tardis on his desk.

Craig Ferguson. Are you referring to his Late Night show on CBS? He left when Letterman retired.

Craig Ferguson has a show, Join or Die, on the History Channel. It's...not that great. He still does his opening bit, but it's around the theme of the episode. Then he and the guests debate six possible contenders for the theme ("History's Biggest Badass," "History's Best Founding Father," etc.). They narrow it down to two and the audience votes for the one they like the best.

As for The Nightly Show...Damn it! I have been enjoying it more than The Daily Show recently. I do agree it could have benefited from some retooling. Grace Para's shtick where she turns everything into an entertain gossip story got old quick. Same with "Pardon the Integration," which, again, was wearing very thin. Likewise, the conspiracy theory bit with Mike Yard was a waste. At least the first two segments had a point, Grace's showed how TV news often overlooked important stories in favor of celebrity gossip. And "Pardon the Integration's" whole point was to show how mindless the arguments on TV are. Mike's Conspiracy Theory bit was just a waste of time.

The round table really depended on the guest. Some were great discussions, others more circle jerks. I think part of the problem was that it was hard to pin down the series regular's opinions. Mike Yard and Ricky Velez often came off as contradictory just to provide another viewpoint.

Wilmore did shine in his opening bits. His constant attacks on Bill Cosby and his recent revisit of the Flint story showed that he was not beholden to a news cycle, which often drops stories when the public tires of them.

I do hope Wilmore lands on his feet, as well as his contributors. I doubt they'll be able to bring the show to another channel or format, but I would love to see these talented people again and soon.

The sad thing is I feel that The Nightly Show could have improved with some re-tooling. The Daily Show needs something drastic. I don't dislike Trevor Noah, but if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick Larry Wilmore. However, TDS now feels like someone softened the edges Jon Stewart worked years on. It's not as hard-hitting or dare I say, "important," as it once was. Maybe Trevor can make it so again, as Stewart did not make it what it became overnight. Maybe someone else needs to take the helm. But they do need to do something. I worry that removing The Nightly Show will cause more attention to focus on its flaws, without something to compare it to.

I was only a casual watcher of the Daily Show, what happened between Stewart and Arby's?
Jon frequently made jokes about "fake sponsor" Arby's...but they apparently took it in stride, as free publicity, and ran this ad during Jon's last episode:

I knew that, I guess I just took Guy's post seriously...

...I've been around here long enough to know better than that ;)

Oh, it was all in good fun.

He made a few jokes about their food being inedible, and then they sent him free stuff, then he made more jokes about there restaurants and they offered him a job. At one point he broke down laughing and apologized, admitting that he had no idea how he dug himself into such a deep hole, and then made another joke about their poor service and bland food.

Yes him..... We had his show on TV over here and it just seemed to vanish from our screens.

There were MONTHS of warning, hell years of warning. He said eh would leave when David letterman left. He wanted to leave a couple years sooner but stayed until Letterman left.

The finale episode was amazing, the last scene was a shoot-out to as many series finale as one could fit.

Comedy Central cancels The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.
That's too bad. I kinda liked that show. :(

I know the ratings were never close to Colbert but I am surprised they cancelled it especially during the election cycle and with no replacement planned possibly until the new year. I stopped watching months ago but mainly because I had too much TV to watch and had to jettison a few shows and I was never going to stop watching Daily show and Colbert's Late Show.

I saw one article saying the show was doomed because people still refuse to talk honestly about race in America and they may have a point because it wasn't a bad show. I hope TDS is alright because over the last few months they are starting to hit their stride and produce some wonderful segments & moments.

Criminal Minds have never been good at writing out its characters. The only way the series can be salvaged is adding new, rookie characters (like the current characters in Season 1). Do a Law & Order type of thing, but don't have them be polished.

Yeah I read about that. He's had a few issues with staff and cast members.

^Beef? At Arby's? You're giving them way too much credit.

This reminds me of a time when my family stopped at Arby's on a roadtrip and we spent a good 10 minutes looking over the menu then ordering for 6 people. Only after this occurred did the person at the register say, "We're actually out of beef today." My mom said, "out of beef? So what can we order then?" Register person: "The mozzarella sticks."
And let me tell you, those were the shittiest mozzarella sticks I've ever eaten.

It's too bad about Wilmore's show. I don't have cable anymore so I rarely got a chance to watch it (or the new Daily Show host), but he is a talented guy and I'm sure he'll move on to something even better.

Yeah, Join or Die is pretty ho-hum. I love Craig, so I was excited for it, and I watched the first few episodes. I think they quickly realized after the pilot that the "panel" really needed an expert, or else it was just some celebrities blabbing about history, in some cases trying (unsuccessfully) to be funny and in other cases, trying to provide information by reciting a few random facts they probably read on Wikipedia 5 minutes before filming started.

But then they started putting an expert on the panel, and it didn't get any better. The problem is the format. It's a 30-minute show that really needs to be an hour. Because in reality, that's 22 minutes, minus 7 for Craig's monologue and epilogue. So you have 15 minutes to discuss 4 historical figures or events (which is less in reality because people tried to crack unfunny pop-culture jokes)? In one of their earliest episodes (I think it was History's Biggest Frenemies), the format really made the content suffer, because they completely glazed over both Thomas Jefferson/John Adams and Steve Jobs/Bill Gates without going into any depth at all. An hourlong show would've given them more time to properly discuss WHY they were frenemies and the impact their rivalry made on history.

Yeah, I realize it's a comedy show, but it could provide some edification in the process. Their hands are tied with the current format, and some of the random comedians on various panels add NOTHING of value.

In any case, I stopped watching after the 5th or 6th episode. Wikipedia suggests that the final episode they taped didn't even air, so I wonder if the thing was just cancelled.
