And here we go again............... :(

That just so happens to be the key reason why I am visiting old(er) entertainment; I tire of thoroughly unlikeable protagonists characterized as "deep" and setting morality that is murky at best. Thankfully, there is plenty of untapped vintage material to satisfy me for a good long while :).
There might be.
But not as good as DS9, TNG, VOY, TOS, NCIS and CSI New York.

So it's legal to make back ups of your own media.

Cool?

But you can't make back ups of a broken disc because it's broken.

And finding replacement disks is all you have been after since the first post.

Here's the rum...

You still have Deep Space Nine on Video Tape?

I bet you do.

You may not have a video player, but that's not an enormous problem.

So you can legally create DVD backs up and keep "most" of Deep Space Nine legally on a hard drive.

And for the two broken episodes out of 140, you can make VHS back ups legally and put them on the same hard drive as your DVD back ups.

Which seems like A LOT of work.

But you never have to worry about disk failure again.

Of course Hard Drives fail, but that's a horse of another colour.

That's not so far away.

The number cited by google in the above quote is 95 years.

1993 + 95 = 2088.

Which is a fair wag.

Unless they change the law again.

Sigh. 95 years is the law now, since the Bono copyright extension. I was writing about the length in the 1990s, before the Bono copyright extension passed.

Lynx, see if you can run the DVD on your computer. I'm not very technical minded but I believe there are playback programs that should make the DVD watchable. As a last resort, you can try copying the entire DVD to your computers hard drive and exporting it into a movie format or burning it to a backup DVD.
The DVD-Video conversion process should be able to correct any issues, unless the disc is badly damaged any corruptions can be error-corrected.

The problem is that I don't have any DS9 on VHS.

The reason for that is that stupid channel which aired the show where I live back in 1997. They took it off the air after only one season!

After that, I spent years hoping that it would show up on some channel. When it finally did, on an SF channel I had to pay for, the channel disappeared halfway through the first season. And the only reason why I did pay for their service was necause of DS9. The rest of their programs, except for The X-files were awful.

That's when I decided to buy the whole series on DVD and then the real nightmare started.

I might have to copy the DVD:s to a hard drive but it's a lot of work and it will take an enormous space on a hard drive. Not to mention that I have to get some tool to edit the error in What You Leave Behind.
But it's an option I may have to try.

Sigh. 95 years is the law now, since the Bono copyright extension. I was writing about the length in the 1990s, before the Bono copyright extension passed.
Are we talking about Sonny Bono or Bono of U2? ;)

The first thing I did was to run the DVD on my computer. With the same terrible result.
If I copy the DVD, then I have to get an editing program to fix the glitch in the episode.

Disc space isn't necessarily a problem, you can get external harddrives relatively cheaply nowadays. If you plunk Deep Space Nine on an external hard drive, you might actually be able to hook that up to your smart TV.

ONE OK ROCK, lightweight? That almost hurt when I read it :)

Well, it started that way for me once and I'm still keeping an eye on that.
But the development is to slow for my taste. It's been ages since he moon landing and not much is happening.
I mean, it isn't just space travel, but technology changes in general, as well as a lot of interest in civilian space travel, Mars research, etc. There's a lot to enjoy.
Which is exactly what I'm doing.
Then some discussion comes up about a certain episode and I think "hey, I have to cjheck that out!" and realizes that this particular episode is on one of the damaged DVD: and so I lose all inspiration and will to debate further.
I mean, OK, but that means giving up on Star Trek in general? :vulcan:
Maybe a box but a box where I can relax after another day in The Gray Universe.
Again, I sympathize but I feel this is putting to much pressure on Star Trek to be that escape. The universe is not all gray.
Unfortunately, DS9 is the series where it's necessary to watch all the episodes in order.
What I'm actually trying to do here is make people aware of Paramount's schemes when it comes to distribute lousy DVD.s and make money out of it. My hope is that people will react and I'm surprised that it hasn't already happened.
JAG is another series where order is necessary as well. And I don't think it's a scheme unless you can demonstrate they are doing this on purpose, out of proportion to failures of other DVD manufactures.

Again, it's a numbers game to Paramount. Does the % of failing discs rise to the level of needing adjustment, i.e. they are losing money on it? Or, is the DVD manufacturing process by its nature going to have so many failures and this is going to fall within the margin of error?

JAG is highly episodic, aside from a couple of 2 parters and some ongoing character development you

Hmmm...not in Season 9 and 10. Yeah, there are episodic beats, but there are ongoing storylines that are not always easy to follow if you had to skip a disc due to an error.

TBH its been years since I watched it and I thought it ended a season after the bald guy retires.

It's interesting and I'm keeping an eye on it. But too little is actually happening and it's going to slow. I wonder if I'm still alive when the first landing on Mars happens.

I mean, OK, but that means giving up on Star Trek in general? :vulcan:
Probably not. But if I no longer can watch the episodes, then I migt just wake up one day and think "I've had enough of this, it's not funny anymore".
Unfortunately it will leave a big empty space. And how to fill that? Honestly I don't want Star trek to be something I enjoyed in a distant past.

I did stop watching NCIS in the beginning of season 18. But fortunately I can watch the older seasons on DVD, at least yet.
Again, I sympathize but I feel this is putting to much pressure on Star Trek to be that escape. The universe is not all gray.
Star Trek isn't my only "escape" from the Gray Universe (this pathetic world and especially this decade which we have to live in now), nor is TV watching. I have other interests too.

But Star Trek is and has been an importan part of it.

I'm planning to but JAG on DVD but I constantly have postponed it because of this consnatt problem with buying TNG and DS9 boxes over and over again.

But it's not only about me. It's about how Paramount is treayting its customers and fans of their shows.

It's al about dignicy, ho to treat the people who actually happens to like their products.

That they constantly have been churning out inferior, sub-standard DVD discs to their customers and fans of their show is a disgrace for the company.

I mean, they are not living on another planet, are they? At least someone among them bust be aware of the complaints about the low standard of their products. How much do they know and do they care.

If it is so bad that they are uninformed and do not know anything about their lousy products, then they are either stupid or ignorand and even arrogant. And that's bad!

But if they are aware of the problems and continue to churn out crap in order to cheat the customers in buying the same stuff over and over again, then they are criminals! And that's even worse!

It simply cant be allowed to continue like this, I mean, they are basically screwing millions of Star Terk fans instead of appreciate thaty people like their shows and want the products.

This has to stop!

They want you to stream.

They are not going to help you not stream.

It's like saying that Bambi's mum cleaned and loaded the gun that shot her.

I think it's a disconnect. It's something I learned from working retail is that the higher up leadership is very far removed now from the manufacturing process. They may simply not be aware because of the disconnect. Again, how big of a problem is this?
But Star Trek is and has been an importan part of it.
Ok, it was for me too. But, when it doesn't hold my interest I have to move on. I read, write, and such.
It's interesting and I'm keeping an eye on it. But too little is actually happening and it's going to slow. I wonder if I'm still alive when the first landing on Mars happens.
I think I will see it. And, even if not, I am excited that it's moving, if slowly.
Probably not. But if I no longer can watch the episodes, then I migt just wake up one day and think "I've had enough of this, it's not funny anymore".

I mean...I feel this is an odd fear. But, then, I'm weird and just revisit TOS whenever I want, which is maybe once a year. The rest of the time I'm usually reading other franchises. My long history with Star Trek isn't my only interest, nor is it a part of my identity. I am confident you have other interests.

It all sounds extremely frustrating.

I sympathize, but I can't offer any practical solutions to your problems, unfortunately.

Obviously it is a problem for many who are buying those products. Take some time and go to Amazon and read the reviews of those discs there, I get the impressin that the problems exists for all the Trek DVD.s. Therefore Paramount must be informed, if they are not aware of the problem.

Move on? But to what?
Honestly, these are the worst time to move on to anything when there is becoming less and less to move on to.
As I wrote before, most of the music sucks, there simply are no good series to watch anymore and the Gray Universe is more dystopian than ever. I do have other interests, but Star trek would leave an empty space if it disappeared out of my life. Unfortunately, I donät have the time to write as much as I would like and I've been suffering from lack of inspiration for a while.

But that's just the point, that you can go back to TOS when you want to do it, not being obstructed by malfunctioning DVD.s

Thank you very much for your concern. I appreciate that.
I don't expect that each and every person who post here can come up with solutions. If someone does, then it's good news for me, otherwise I'm happy for concern and understanding.

Today I ordered a new DS9 box, obviously a copy of the one I already have, produced the same year too.
I will use it for replacing current and future damage discs in the one I already got.

Fortunately these new discs will last at least three years and during that time something might show up, something like DS9 on Blu-Ray or so.

Indeed, they must. But Amazon is not informing them.

With all due respect, and not knowing you from the one armed man, I think you might benefit from some professional help. If Star Trek is the only thing getting you through and a lack of inspiration then I would be concerned from a mental health standpoint. Star Trek is nice, I don't have the obsessive nature over it as you do. If it disappeared I would still have Star Wars, Stargate, NCIS, JAG, Lord of the Rings, tabletop gaming, personal research on mythology, building a house in my spare time, researching space travel, not to include writing fan fiction. Star Trek was a big part of my early years, but it wasn't the only thing.

Well, that's because I use streaming and VHS.

I stream through Paramount + and the quality on my end is pretty good. My receiver and my TV upscales from the original on my living 4k. Also, my monitor is 8k @ 60 and 4k@120 thru my new computer. Really sweet renderings of DS9, also...listening through Sennheiser's...again, sweet.

Indeed, they must. But Amazon is not informing them.
Then it's time that they will be informed. But they have the bad habit of not replying to messages and mails.

That wasn't a particularily nice thing to state.
In normal cases, I would have reacted with a very nasty reply. But since we have had a rather cordial discussion here in this thread, I will let it go-for this time.

You have totally misunderstood me if you think that Star Trek is the "only thing getting me through". I do have a lot of other interests, like many of those you mention as your own interests above. I could add sports, in which most of all support a local theam, music, travel, reading good books, dabbling in some local politics too even if I despise all kind of "ideologies".

In fact, I have so much to do that I find ut hard to find time for some writing, a problem which I have to sort out. So Star Trek isn't my one and only interest, even if I must admit that it is a nice way to relax after a day in the Gray Universe with all its troubles. I can also assure you that my watching of Star Trek episodes is limited to one or two episodes a week, mostly on Friday evenings when I have time for it.

But I don't like to be cheated and I don't like when dishonest people's actions take something away from me which I like, no matter if it is Star Trek, devastating of a place in the nature where I like to be or cuts in the train traffic to and from the town where I live which causes problems for the population. Most of all I hate when dishonest people cheat me.

When things like that happen, then I'll fight!

I guess it also might have something to do with having to move away from my home town as a kid, due to bad politics in a far away capital. I depised those who just accepted it and promised to return when I was old enough to take care of myself. Which I did!

It's a principle for me to not back down, especially not to thiefs, swindlers, political scumbags who think they are better than the common people and dishonest people.

Well, that's because I use streaming and VHS.
I have had some bad experiences with streaming and I don't like to pay a monthly sum for a service which gives me one series I really like to watch while the rest is crap and then they stop airing the series I watch in the midle of it and suggests that I shoud watch a show I hate instead. Not to mention bandwith problems and having to drag cables all over the house and still don't get a good picture.

As for VHS, I really regret that I didn't tape all Star Trek series. I have a lot of tapes from all series but they are not complete, especially not DS9 since the local channel who did air it in 1997 stopped airing it after one season.
