An idea about the Master

I was on another forum that ran an art contest to envision the 13th, and final, incarnation of the Doctor. One entry dipicted the last Doctor paired with the Master regenerated into a bratty little girl that he was to take into his charge, making the young "Miss Master" essentially his companion. I felt that had some interesting possibilities.

Well if we can't have him as the Doctor, Benedict Cumberbatch would make an interesting Master for Matt Smith. Hes certainly got the cultured intensity down. Though I can't seem to find a clip anywhere of him behaving like a baddie.

Benedict reminds me of Steven Pacey of Blakes 7.

Trivia: Matt Smith auditioned for the Watson role, but his take was "too barmy".

The American doesn't know what "barmy" means. Please explain.

Jacobi's just in another category entirely. Wish we could have seen more of him.

Agreed. If the man could have spawned two races of immortals, playing a Time Lord would be a snap!

Smith vs Crispin Glover

Now you're just trying to scare me!

Personally, I'd kinda like to see Jonathan Pryce come back. I think the Master works best as a melodramatic mustache twirler in the mould of Roger Delgado or Anthony Ainley. Pryce was a perfect successor to that lineage.

To me the Master works best when they give him a bit of a sense of humor and sophistication (and maybe even a little bit sexy) while still making him an evil genius. I think thats where they failed with Ainley. They just made him batshit crazy and obsessed. Eric Roberts Master was just a monster.

Jacobi's Master was great in what little we saw of him. Simm's was just a little too manic and insane, although I thought he improved greatly in his final appearance.

Barmy = Loony.

I believe the Americans spell it as 'Balmy' (?) - which would seem to be a confusion based on the two words sounding similar, as 'balmy' simply means to have the properties of balm - originally a resin from the 'basalm' plant, though in common use it more generally refers to any plant-derived lotion or salve which is calming (it is for this reason we refer to pleasant warm weather as 'balmy' or soothing).

'Barmy' derives from a 16th century brewing term meaning 'full of barm', with barm meaning 'froth', so literally 'full of froth'. Hence the latter association with crazy people/ideas/things.

You are clearly a person of great perception and taste. Pryce was brilliant!

I usedn't to be sure (as a very casual viewer) whether or not the Delgado and Ainsley Masters were meant to be the same incarnation of The Master - all pointy black beards, glowering eyes etc. Pryce also looked along the same lines. I thought it interesting that these incarnations (if you count Pryce as one) looked so alike, while all the Doctors looked so different.

I like Simms Master but I would like to see another pointy-bearded glowering Master at some stage.

Man, I can't believe The Master is so stereotyped by the fans. No one gets on-board with the Crispin Glover level of evil and malice? I'm thinking no one could pull off a better "odd alien" Master to match Smith's "odd alien" Doctor.

Oh well. Just me I guess. You may want to tune out when I take over the show, though... :techman:  ;)

Ainley was mainly good in his early Master appearences alongside Tom, and his last in the final McCoy story (Where he was toned down a great deal). He was mostly campy during the Davison years, and in Colin Baker's years he was kind of overshadowed by the Rani and the Valeyard.

When the Master returns he needs Dalek Bumps...

The, I can see Glover as the Master, and I don't see why the Master always has to regenerate as a very similar looking character, but similarly I don't see why he has to be the opposite of the current Doctor (as Simm was, all gurning lunacy like Ten) Delgado and PErtwee were similar but not that similar.

Unfortunetley I think Ainley was at his best when he wasn't playing the Master, his portryal of Tremas is very subtle compared with what would follow (and I appreciate a lot of that was down to JNT telling him to amp-or should that be camp-it up)

True, I went with the RTD/Holmes conceit of The Master being a dark reflection of the whichever incarnation he was opposing. And, honestly, that's what was fun about it. I've done the same thing with Romana before, trying to match actresses to the Doctors. Let's face it: there a lot of great actors out there that could be The Master. A lot of them would be the stereotypical dark guy we know. And some of them would be able to mold something brand new from the role. But, for me, this exercise was about trying to match each Doctor up with the best actor available. Would Alan Rickman dominate any and every scene with Sylvester McCoy? Absolutely. Doesn't mean I still wouldn't like to see it, you know? ;) :techman:

No, I agree with you. It's just that this is a children's show. We don't want to give nightmares to the kiddies... or me... :(

No dude. This is Doctor Who. We should absolutely want to give EVERYONE nightmares! That's when hiding behind the sofa is the most fun! :techman:

You know, with Jo back in SJA it would be cool if they'd have her appear with an incarnation of the Master, as she was the companion with the most experience dealing with him (Outside of Tegan and the UNIT trio).

My only excuse is I've only ever seen him in the BttF trilogy. Plus I confess to a certain predjuce against American actors playing major roles on Who.

(If someone tells me he's British I'm gonna do the mother of all facepalms)
