Spoilers An easy explanation for the klingon ship design in Season 1

Might be any Klingon ship starts out fairly plain, and then endures through centuries of refits, accruing Gothic ornamentation among other things. And any fresh start thus goes back to the roots and involves a fairly plain design that gets mass-produced - and in a war where losses mount, it's these fresh ships being lost, before they have time to collect fame and hood ornaments.

Makes sense.

From the fact Tkinga and berels are seen over 100 years after they originally appears shows that Klingon ships are made to last and be continually refited and upgraded.

My guess is that the houses treat their fleets like family airlooms and signs of prestige and very carefully maintain, upgrade and modify them from base designs.
I would go as far as saying every house even has it's own fleet doctrines with some houses relieing on fast raiding and others heavy hitting battleships.

In later trek although the the houses still have their own fleets my guess is that the Klingon defence force refers to the fleet or fleets directly under the chancellor's control and as such will likely be more standised.

Much how the President is commander-in-chief of the Federal Armed Forces but the individual Governors are considered Commanders-in-Chief of the state National Guards unless they're federalized by the President for a national mission.

In the Season 1 dvd set with special features, there is a deleted scene from Butcher's Knife in which Voq and L'Rell are talking and there is a bright light that surprises them and they look up at this. (I did a screen-grab of the image):

Although it says "Bird of Prey", obviously it's a D7 and whoever wrote the text-over didn't know the difference.

Point being, it was going to show up fairly early in Season 1, until the decision was made for whatever reason to delete the scene.

It's just a placeholder image of Qo'noS one. That doesn't mean it was the intended design for that shot.

I realize where the stock image derives from, TUC, but as only a 'placeholder'.... I'm not sure about that. The bright light that surprises Voq and L'Rell, and their reactions to what they see seem to indicate it's meant to be something very significant, not just an ordinary bird of prey.

I think the D7 itself was intended for that scene.

I disagree based on what we know.

And they're surprised because they were not expecting anyone to show up at all. They assumed they'd been abandoned by the rest of the Empire.

I think you're looking too far into this.

And that is....what? To be honest, if it has to do with any behind-the-scenes tidbits, I'm really not up-to-speed on all of that sort of thing right now, so feel free to fill me in if I am missing something here. :)

They only Klingon ships they had in Season 1, were the ones you saw. They never designed any others.

And if they intended the D7 to be in Season 1, i don't think they'd be parading it as a new design in Season 2.

It's just a place holder for one of the DSC designs. Probably a Bird of Prey based on the text.

Maybe it was intended to be a bit of a tease in Season 1....only shown in that very brief scene....but then the decision was made to leave any/all reveal until Season 2, with no tease in Season 1.

Speculation, yes, but doesn't seem unreasonable.

And not every person who works on the production knows the difference between a bird of prey and a battle cruiser....
