AMC - Cowboy movies

Okay, I gotta ask. Does anybody like all those old cowboy movies that AMC seems like airing so much?!

Absolutely! The only problem is that they seem to not have a very big selection and tend to run the same ones over and over.

I love westerns, and there are many that stand among the best films ever made. I think The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is my favorite.

I don't have AMC though, and haven't really watched it since the days when it was commercial free.

I do.

I also grew up with westerns, even though it was the 80's. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of sitting up late at night watching westerns with my granddad.

Agreed. That's my favorite, too. Although I like THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN as well.

It's funny. I wasn't a big western fan in my youth, preferring scifi and horror flicks. But I've developed a taste for them as I've gotten older . . . which means I've got a whole new genre to explore.

That fact that I've been reprinting all of Richard Matheson's old westerns has also increased my appreciation of the genre. Somebody really needs to film some of those old books. THE GUNFIGHT, in particular, would make a great tv-movie.

As far as Wayne goes, I'm a big fan of The Shootist. Great cast, and it really pulls on the heart strings.

I'm 30, and greatly enjoy old westerns, or at least a lot of them. I think I picked up a taste for them from my Dad. High Noon is one of my favorites.

But I can understand why they are not terribly popular anymore. They're slow at times, fairly predictable and black and white is just not as cool as color.

I enjoy old westerns and i'm 31. I grew up watching them in reruns, just like trek. I love Eastwood better than Wayne, but still. Theres about 250 westerns on Netflix that I just discovered. I plan on starting to watch them. As far as AMC goes, there is little variety and too many comercials.

I think Rio Bravo might be might favorite. But pretty much any John Wayne western I like.
Rio Bravo is one of my favorites too. Angie Dickinson looked great in this one.

I think one of the reasons I like it so much is that the entire cast is outstanding. Dean Martin, known more a singer, really turns in a good performance. And I believe Walter Brennan turns in one of his finest. Ricky Nelson is probably the weakest link in the cast, but still okay.

The Searchers may actually be Wayne's best film and best performance. I probably like Rio Bravo more because it's a bit more on the comedic side, and I tend favor those types of movies/tv shows. But you can't go wrong with either one.

I need to watch Rio Bravo back to back with El Dorado from memory they seemed to be the same movie with a different supporting cast. :alienblush:

I think the problem is that they are trying to fill Saturday's as their Western bloc but Ted Turner controls the rights to the vast catalog of Westerns and TCM often counter programs their own Saturday Western day.

Yeah I knew TCM had their own western lineup which I assumed filled the role in Cable lnd. So I guess AMC wants to compete. Haha I didn't know cowboy movies had such a huge fan base which is why I was curious.
