Am I the only one that felt uncomfortable about the old Hurt Serials?

Re: Am I the only one that felt uncomfortable about the old Hurt Seria

I didn't care much for Pepe the Flatulent Dalek.

Re: Am I the only one that felt uncomfortable about the old Hurt Seria

I thought the episode where the Hurt doctor battled frankenstein was great.

It was an okay episode, but the Monster's "Spin my nipple nuts and send me to Alaska!" line was a bit much.

Also, what did everyone think of them using that old song from the seventies "doctor whooo hey, doctor who!" as the main theme song?

Let's just say I'm glad when RTD came on the scene they worked out their differences with Ron Grainer's estate.
Amen.

Loved it! I prefer the one with the zombies though.

That was the best part!!!

Ooh, who else hated the episode when a big glitter cloud made the Hurt doctor gay and camp, and he, single handily had to killed the glitter cloud with fire to rid himself of being camp.

Also, I love how the Hurt era managed so well without any companions at all. Something RTD tried to mimic at the end of Tennant's reign but failed to do so.

^ I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say "without any companions at all;" this thread is literally full of examples of some truly classic companions, many of which I wish would be brought back someday, even if only for a one-off.

What was impressive was the number of so-called "Doctor-lite" episodes, brought about by Hurt's contractual eight-week holiday in the middle of the filming block. The producers' use of Paul McGann in these flashback episodes was a stroke of genius, and it's a shame RTD discontinued what had become a well-loved tradition when he took over.

Ya know, I actually like HurtDoctor's Pimp-Daddy Priest outfit with the Rust Jacket, probably a good idea it was changed before the Michael Jackson episode(s) though, might conjure up the wrong image

Yeah, but his only companions were ones from the classic series who were just guest staring. Well, them and.........Scrappy the Dog! Who'd have known an ordinary Earth dog would make one of the best and most well written companions of all time? Scrappy the Dog has to be one of my personal favourite Doctor Who companions, and I hate dogs! A shame his initials were STD though, and when geeks on forums realised this, the BBC had no choice but to get rid of Scrappy. After Scrappy The Dogs departure, that's the thing that drove the rest of the Hurt era down the dark side. Who'd' have known a random stray dog could have that much power over a series?

Oh my yes, the McGann flashback-sodes! I did love them so much! The doctor who fan circuit actually looked forward to them more than the actual hurt episodes. Which is why series posters would often feature both the 8th and 8.5th doctor. It's because of the McGann episodes the Hurt era is my favourite. Plus that episode when Scrappy the Dog travelled back in time to meet the eighth doctor was probably the best episode of the entire Hurt era. And Hurt wasn't even in it. Yes when RTD took over and scrapped the McGann flashbacks, there certainly was a massive uproar in who fandom.

Ah yes, John Nathan Turner returned to Doctor Who for Hurts first series and the priest outfit and you know John, always liked weird outfits. Edwardian cricketer, clowns, Sylvester McCoy. Hurts priest outfit is actually kind of in keeping with Johns style. But when John had to leave after series one which went really well, the new writer wanted to give doctor who a more mature and adult theme. Plus half the time with series one, Hurt was just doing Father Ted quotes, and Channel 4 threatened to sue if the BBC didn't stop quoting them and as extra punishment, the doctor can never ever dress up as a priest again until 2040.

I liked most of the Hurt Doctor's costumes, except for the catsuit. That was a sonic screwdriver best left to the imagination.

I'm glad that cat suit was only used for one story where he had to get Scrappy The Dog to chase him into the Judoon mother ship.

yeah that sonic screwdriver was awful. I was glad when they replaced it with the blue one that people mistake for the RTD sonic. Damn JNT, he did like some funny screwdrivers. ;)

Re: Am I the only one that felt uncomfortable about the old Hurt Seria

The "Human factor" arc where the Hurt doctor (with chameleon rewritten DNA) played a cabbie on "East Enders" was brilliant

Re: Am I the only one that felt uncomfortable about the old Hurt Seria

Oh yes that was a good one. Plus it finally added Dimensions in Time to canon brilliantly.

Re: Am I the only one that felt uncomfortable about the old Hurt Seria

LOL!

Also, that John Hurt tweet (now deleted) is intriguing... Could Capaldi's Doctor be the "past" Time-Lord that tried to prevent Hurt's regeneration before the regeneration episode?

lol. :p

Hey, does anyone remember The Hurt Big Finish audios? Man they were awful.

I believe the intention at the time was that he was supposed to be the Valeyard. But, they did leave it vague and open to interpretation, so who knows? Could be Capaldi after all.

Yeah, I'm just going to spoil the fun and say it. I hate these discussions of non-existent stories. Is there not enough to discuss with the really-filmed-and-actually-existing episodes of DW?

No.

Re: Am I the only one that felt uncomfortable about the old Hurt Seria

I was just watching the 2 parter regeneration into Hurt... man they went all out on that one... Liz Sladen "Forrest Gump-ed" into the footage with her younger self being completely ignored by Kerwyn and James... Priceless.

Dude, we're in a No Man's Land at the moment. It's been months since the last episode aired, so discussion has dried up. The big news bombshells since then Matt Smith's departure is old news and Capaldi's casting is cooling off. The 50th is months away, and with no spoilers, trailer or even a title, there's nothing to discuss there. So we need to have these diversions, "in the name of peace and sanity."

Besides, as long as we leave the talk about John Hurt's era restricted to this thread, there's no harm done. If someone went into a thread about continuity problems in Waters of Mars and cited precedents from one of Hurt's stories, then I could see legitimate need to complain. But one thread for goofing around and having some fun? Perfectly okay.
