I went from TV to a HiDef projector last year and LOVE it! I can vary it from small (about 36inches) to...............DAMN! At $1500 it was by far the best choice for me and it takes up NO space b/c it is just a little box hanging from the ceiling and the matte white paint of my living room is the "screen."

If I had my own home, that's what I would do, too.
As it is we have a small apartment, so it's no dice.

To be fair, the black and white Hungarian art films from the 50's you Hipsters like aren't going to look much better on a projector than they do on a 14" portable.

I've got a 10 year old JVC in my bedroom here. It's low def, and its glorious. I'll only upgrade to high-def when it becomes absolutley necessary.

We were only replacing TVs as each one died. Our 36" we had for 14 years, and it was used when we bought it.

^ I used to have this beautiful monstrosity of a CRT that I picked up at a thrift store a few years ago. I'm still cursing myself for not unplugging it during a power outage. Even though it was plugged into a surge protected power bar, it still got zapped when the power went back on.

Anything shot on film will look good in high def, since, y'know, film is higher def than "high def".

True enough. Or the condition it was in to begin with. I know that when I was editing 16mm we definitely dropped a couple of strips on the ground, or forgot to put gloves on.

To be honest, I can't remember what the equivalence would be. It's hard to make a point by point comparison because film has no resolution, strictly speaking. Practically, it just has a limit where projecting it too large becomes untenable. This will vary not only with the format, but what ISO you're using, and the conditions when filming, etc.

16mm is about on par with 1080p. So yeah, 8mm definitely doesn't have the same level of detail as HD (1080p at least).

Yeah, I was just looking it up and most people say 8mm is about equivalent to a DVD. That's strictly in terms of "resolution". Obviously, most 8mm films won't have an optimal image quality to begin.

EDIT: Or rather, 8mm is more like 720p, since DVD is interlaced. Also, from what I was reading, 16mm would be higher than 1080p -- closer to something like 1600.

I don't have a TV at all. I watch tv series and movies on my 19" LCD desktop monitor or on the 17" WS LCD screen of my laptop.
However I am considering buying a 42" HDTV next year.

I don't have a flatscreen of any kind either. My boyfriend probably wishes that I did though. He hurt his back moving it into my new apartment. Believe me, there were backrubs and homemade chocolate chip cookies to make up for it.

I had a 27 inch CRT, that I got from freecycle. Works fine. Then I get a new mobile home.

My uncle, who lives far, wanted to get me a housewarming gift. He also thought about upgrading to HD, so he bestowed me his ViewSonic flatscreen LCD which is 40 inches and he got himself an HD, so I didn't buy it, but I love it. It's not HD, but I have no money to buy Blue Rays anyway!

I do own plasma tv's and what not...
but the tv that I keep at work is my Sony Wega that I purchased over 10 years ago
It's old
and it's SUPER HEAVY
But you want to know something, the picture is still top notch and I love that tv!
It was the first thing I purchased when I moved out on my own (yup... I had an empty apartment with clothes stacked in the closet and a tv in the living room on the floor

^ I'm still using a 32" Sony Wega, about 10 years old. A flat screen LCD or plasma is inevitable. The Vizios are relatively cheap, the same price as what I paid at the time.

My 20" Aiwa CRT TV died a few months ago. I'm getting it replaced with something this Christmas as a gift from the folks. I'm hoping for one of those up-to-19" Flatscreen LCD TV's with some HD capacity that I saw at Target a few weeks ago. They were all $300 or less so, it should be affordable.
