I don't own an LCD or a plasma. Costs WAY too much for me right now. I have three TVs, one is a 13in TV/DVD combo which I have in my room(not hooked up to caple or anything) a 24in Sharp TV (which I bought in Best Buy about 6 years ago) in the living room, and a 19in Sharp (which I bought at the supermarket I worked at when we were selling them for christmas).
I will wait till the LCD/plasma TVs come down in price( like around the price I paid for my 24in regular TV, which was LESS the $200.00)

I saw a 32" LCD for $399 the other day. How much better do the prices have to be?

I waited 12 years before upgrading my 27" CRT. I got this 37" LCD in Dec:

For an LCD TV 32" isn't that big, especially in a living room when your couch is 9 feet from the TV. For me, I would need at least a 37" at the minimum, and they are still pricy. Also, when looking at an LCD quality matters, I would want one with a good contrast ratio and such, usually the cheap ones don't have a good image quality. If I were to get one, I'd get a good one like Philips, or Sharp or Samsung. The new Sharp Aquos series for example has a great image quality, and Philips are pretty much at the top for the best image quality, but pricey.

Well the viewing range for a 32" is about 8-10 feet, so that's about right.

What are you complaining about? Even a 32" LCD with a 16:9 aspect ratio is better than a 27" CRT. If you look at a DVD or HD station on it you won't look at your other TV the same again. I've seen 37" LCDs for less than $500. I bought my 27" CRT for $550 in 1995.

The biggest tv I have in 19", and I bought it when I was pregnant.

Need I remind anyone that my son is 10?

Actually I bought mine about the same time. And despite its great age, she suits me just fine.


Now don't get me wrong. I would like to have a nice flat screen. But right now I don't see any reason to spend the money. And the only real reason I would see the need is to save some space in the living room. A CRT takes up a 3'x3'x3' of space, space that I could be using for furniture.

I would argue that the need to buy a big screen HD TV is one of the major contributing factors in the credit crisis.

Yes, because a $2000 TV is what is breaking people. Not that $60,000 Hummer in the driveway.

The $2000 TV they bought a Best Buy for 18 months no interest.

I have a $16K vechile too that was paid off a few months short of the end of the note.

My point was that original comment was silly. New TVs aren't responsible for the current credit crisis, well not alone. TVs are on sale all of the time from the big electronics stores often with 18 months or so of no interest line of credit. Hardly something that's going to ruin people even with a $5000 TV.

The credit crisis came more from people buying more home than they needed/could afford, taking out second mortgages for home repairs/upgrades/new furnishings, stupidly buying into ARMS and, yes, possibly overloading their credit cards with things including big-screen TVs.

People buying TVs is but a tiny piece of the problem if it's a piece at all because, again, they're comparitively cheap compared to homes and bought on store credit cards can be bought at no interest (presuming the purchaser pays off the debt before the end of the "no credit" term.)

I would still be happy as a lark with my 18 year old 20-something inch CRT if I hadn't messed it up while attempting to move it. *grumble* And I still would've put off buying a new tv if the 4-5 year old CRT in the living room didn't give up the ghost completely out of the blue a week later and if the google-fu hadn't turned up a bunch of people who had the same issue with their set that discovered buying new tvs would be more economical than fixing it.

Go figure.

I ended up going out on Black Friday (around 8am well after the initial rushes ) and found a very nice 26" LCD set for my bedroom for good price at H.H. Gregg. The living room can wait a little longer. Maybe with my tax return.

I don't think he meant it alone. He was more talking about keeping something that's working well and waiting to buy when something is affordable, instead of the whole mindset of 'Buy new, buy now, use credit'.

And yeah, I still have my +40 CRT of Fortitude. Like Mallory, I'll probably stick with those 'till they die.

That's why I only buy things in cash/debit. It takes away the temptation to think that you can splurge now and worry later.

It's still a decent size. I can't really complain about it, and it's perfect for the way my living room is set up.

When it comes to TVs, I personally think that bigger is always better. I bought a 32" LCD two years ago that I viewed from about 8'. After a while I realized it was too small, so six months ago I replaced it with a 46" LCD that I also watch from 8' and it's perfect for DVDs and 720p videos. OTOH, when I'm watching Blu-rays I actually move my couch to about 6' away from the telly.

Though honestly, I think a 40"-42" would be just fine for most people when watching it from 8' away.

I have a LCD TV in my bedroom, but my current living room TV is a 28" Panasonic CRT.

I might replace that soon, not sure.

We have 4 tvs in our house only 3 get used and all of them are the old CRTs. We dont have a need for a new tv so we wont be getting one anytime soon. Its just not financially time. It is also not a necessity.

It's actually quite irritating if you think about it.
My dad bought a 42" Toshiba HDTV. It's a beautiful television, but when you think 42" you think "wow, that's huge!", until you get it home and hook everything up. I mean, it's still a large TV, but the widescreen effect makes it look much smaller. It actually looks smaller than our 36" RCA CRT TV we owned until it went and fizzled out.

I went from TV to a HiDef projector last year and LOVE it! I can vary it from small (about 36inches) to...............DAMN! At $1500 it was by far the best choice for me and it takes up NO space b/c it is just a little box hanging from the ceiling and the matte white paint of my living room is the "screen."
