Alternate Universes in TOS

The black and white ones come from a generally funnier and better universe. ;)

I have heard the "every episode is its own universe" concept before. I can't remember if I originally saw it here, or in some of the old fanzines or something. But to me, that's splitting hairs a little too much, over what is largely nitpicky, trivial minutiae. I try to just accept that it's all in the same setting in a "broad strokes" kind of way. Heck, real life has enough apparent discrepancies that some days seem like they might be happening in another universe.

Kor

I first encountered it, in 1978, in an article published in the first Best of Trek anthology.

SPOILER: The author of that article was one Mark Andrew Golding.

The OP has been expounding upon this particular hypothesis at length for at least 43 years, assuming, of course, for the sake of argument that we accept the premise that 43 years falls somewhere between 42.0001 years and 43.9999 years - well, in this space-time continuum anyway.

(In Worf's tone) YES!!!!!

Thank you MAGolding & XCV! I may now change my profile status message! I no longer need to be "looking for information on source of Rip Van Winkle's secret to sleep."

I nodded off several times trying to get through your posts. It's the Holy Grail of Morpheus!

It's one timeline

Not counting the mirror universe of course...or the Kevin timeline...or the Myriad Universe books...or the realities seen in Parallels...

But all kidding aside, yeah. To me the Kirk I watched in Shore Leave is the Kirk in Amok Time is the Kirk in Yesteryear is the Kirk in Motion Picture is the Kirk in Voyage Home is the Kirk in the Death of Kirk comics is the Kirk in Generations is the Kirk in the Shatnerverse. Same with Spock, Picard, Sisko, Kira, Odo, McCoy, Data, Worf, Janeway, Archer, 7, Pike, Burnham, Boimler, Saru, Quark, Bashir et al.

I know this is a Star Trek message board...and the point is to have fun discussing the show...but....

If I had a nickel for every time I'm tempted to say "It's only a TV show" after reading a post...well...you know the rest of that story.

After spending a few years here, I think that there is either some very unbounded creativity on display at TrekBBS or deep psychosis. It's most likely both at the same time. Hallucinogens could explain a lot as well.

Either that or some people just really need to get out into the sun and engage in actual 3D interaction with other humans.
