Top 3:
1. TWOK: This movie is one of the rare films that succeeds on multiple levels, not just as a Star Trek movie...but as a movie in general. There's not much left that hasn't been said already, but it is as much a sci-fi adventure as it is a revenge thriller. But, most importantly, the piece that gets so often overlooked, is that it is an excellent character study of Kirk. When you peel away the fact that the entire epic Khan storyline is just a vehicle to have a small character story about Kirk…it’s really amazing what they weaved together. Not to mention the moral/ethical gray areas around the Genesis Project, the perfectly-executed Spock sacrifice, and the epic space battles.
2. TSFS: I tend to view this and TWOK as a “linked at the hip” unit, so it’s very hard for me to separate these two from each other. While this one isn’t as good as TWOK, I have to say that these two as a unit represent my favorite story arc in the entire franchise. TSFS isn’t quite as bold or intricate as its predecessor, but the themes of family, friendship and sacrifice are all there, and it works magnificently. I also love it for it’s (often very under-appreciated) world-building and advancement of the Trekverse.
3. TMP: This is a polarizing film, but it is also a very immersive and epic experience. I think the Kirk and Spock character arcs are outstanding, and the deep themes about purpose and friendship are classically Trek. Also, it is easily the best-looking film of the original 6, and the soundtrack is absolutely legendary.
Runner-Up Tier:
4. TFF: Yes, I know putting this 4th is highly controversial, but if my list above teaches me anything, it’s that the stories that really focus on the main characters are the ones that I love most, and TFF does that well. The interplay between the Big 3 is the best it’s been since TOS aired. The story, while flawed, is the closest thing any Trek film before or since came to capturing the feel of the original. I also love that they dared to try something different…and the concepts of Sha Ka Ree and The Great Barrier inspired true wonder and awe in me at the time of my first viewing.
5. 2009: I must have seen this 10 times in the theater when it first premiered. It’s a wonderfully fun, kinetic, colorful romp through the Trekverse. It has first-rate casting, awesome action set pieces, a beautiful score and amazing visual effects.
Good, but not Go-To’s:
6. FC: Although flawed, and at times I actually like NEM more than this…it’s still a fun and entertaining film with some great performances and a lot of genuine tension.
7. NEM: This one needed to be edited quite differently, but I think this is the most cinematic and engaging of all the TNG movies.
8. BEY: Again, it succeeds more on the strengths of the cast and the production values than it does on story…but it’s a fun adventure that is hard to resist.
9. TUC: I think TUC is criminally over-rated, as it feels rushed and has an inconsistent tone throughout, but it’s a relatively good Trek movie despite these flaws and despite a middle act that is very slow and massively uninteresting. The plot is also extremely flimsy and doesn’t stand up under any kind of scrutiny. The end space battle is unique and reminds me of TOS’s minimalist battles.
Meh:
10. TVH: It’s cute and warm and fuzzy, and it’s a delight to see the cast / characters having so much fun. Otherwise, it doesn’t do much for me.
11. ID: Like I’ve said many times, the first ¾ of the film is great, followed by a horrific last ¼…it reminds me of a really hectic carnival ride that spins and twists and gyrates everywhere and you have a blast while you’re on it……….until you get off and throw up everywhere. That said, I still enjoy the ride.
12. GEN: There’s so much good here, but the plot and pacing are too flawed for me to put this any higher. Shatner’s performance is too much fun, and I thought he nailed the death scene perfectly. The Enterprise crash is amazing. But— it really is an inexcusable mess otherwise.
Bad:
13. INS: Any time your $60M major motion picture is less memorable and remarkable than a standard hour long episode that cost 1M bucks to produce…you have a problem. Tepid, soggy, and miscalculated across the board….it’s the only Trek film I actively dislike. 3/4 of the TNG episodes are better than this.
