Spoilers All Things STAR WARS - News, Speculation & Spoilers Thread

Is it just me or is The Volume becoming really noticeable now?
The only place it stood out to me was when Baylan and Shin were talking alone on top of the tower. Otherwise, everything looked great.

Who knows. Maybe we've already seen Snoke. In the most recent episode of Ahsoka some random masked dude got a lightsabre in the face and it made me think of Snoke's scar in the same area. Whether he shows up or not people will look for him.
Or maybe Kino Loy becomes Snoke! He gets the scar from failing to swim during the escape!

(Note: I'm not even remotely serious)

Usually what gives the volume away is an unnatural stillness in the air. It's not easy recreating a natural wind on a soundstage (and when you try, it's inevitably noisy.) By rights, it should have been blowing a gale up on that tall tower, yet the best they could do was a light breeze.

As with any tool, the volume works best when it's used with it's strengths and weaknesses in mind. Still, I'm quite happy to let a little bit of obvious trickery slide. It's not like I haven't been watching movies and TV shows with wildly varying quality of blue/green screen work, mattes, make-up and costumes my whole life. So long as I'm engaged in the story and characters, it could be cardboard sets and theatrical grease paint for all I care.

Indeed. My wife and I were watching MASH recently and there is a painfully obvious reverse projection shot. It was barely worth commenting on as we enjoyed and laugh at the episode.

Let's also not forget that pulling off the shot of the hangar bay descending in-camera, complete with interactive lighting could only have been done with Stagecraft. The alternative would have been a complicated green-screened lighting rig, or fake it in post. I prefer in-camera.

Is it just me or is The Volume becoming really noticeable now? Maybe I wouldn't notice it if I didn't know it was there but there's so many, many shots and tracking shots where you can pretty much make out where the physical props and cast members stop and the Volume begins. Trek also suffers from that occasionally but they do seem to blend it's use in much more subtly than the new SW shows do. YMMV
There are a few times in Strange New Worlds where I had an idea where their Volume started, but most it was mostly just guess work based on where the actors were standing, and how far they walked and things like that. I haven't really noticed it on the Star Wars shows.

If there's a curved step, or barrier somewhere in SWN/DSC, then most of the time it's the wall lol

I feel like I understand the urge to make fake trailers for things. Once upon a time I might have made a fake trailer for Episode 7 if I had had the necessary technology and skills. But it's a letdown when you find a trailer thinking it's the real deal and you play it and it turns out to be fanmade.

Yeah, it especially pisses me off when they actually put "Official Trailer" in the title of their fake trailer. I have no problem with fan trailers, I've watched a few myself from time to time, but I don't think they should lie and try to pass if off as the official trailer.

This is why I never search for a trailer, I search for the official channel of whoever's releasing it (Star Wars, Marvel Entertainment, Sony Pictures, etc. etc.) Gives you the added bonus of also avoiding trailer reposters.

That really is super annoying. And, yeah, fan stuff is otherwise generally a pleasure to watch.

I do the same thing, or I at least make sure it's a trustworthy channel, like IGN or Rotten Tomatoes Trailers (formerly known as MovieClips trailers).

Speaking of old school fan trailers that aren't trying to fool anyone, I just noticed HFP has put out their Andor/Rogue One video.

While it's not their best work, I'm glad to see they at least kept the runtime of this one under 15mins (the Ahsoka one from last year was as long as an episode of Clone Wars in it's own right!) as I find brevity is often the key to pulling off this kind of thing effectively.
Mostly though, what it does well is highlight just how closely Andor is keeping to Rogue One's style and tone, even borrowing certain shots that I hadn't noticed before. The intercutting between them is seamless.
