Spoilers All Things STAR WARS - News, Speculation & Spoilers Thread

I will, from henceforth, just refer to it as The Oscar Winning Film.

Because that thing that is on Disney+ isn't it.
No duh. It's a different cut of the film and the fact it's so available is why people have been clamouring for this new rerelease and have made fan restorations like 4K77 beforehand.

Side note, 4K77 is really fantastic. My go to way of watching the movies before this new release comes in 2027.

4K77 in mono is my happy place.

I'm not sure where that came from, but there has never been an official release in the US. According to the Disney Wiki there have been several home media releases in Europe and Asia, so I'm assuming it must one of those.
One thing I find a little ironic about Disney's refusal to release it, is that there are a lot of black people, like Whoopi Goldberg, who actually want them to release it.

"Original cut" refers to the 1977 version. We have:
The 1977 release
The redone 1977 release which adds the "New Hope" moniker to fit with The Empire Strikes Back and its opening crawl which foreshadowed the twist by listing itself as "Episode V" hinting at a large backstory
The Special Edition, 1997, which adds new effects, a deleted scene, and introduces the running theme of the 'Han Shot First" scene being altered in some way or manner
The 2004 DVD version, same as 1997 but with botched colour timing and a new model for Jabba during the reinserted scene
The 2011 Blu-ray release, same but with a more comical sound for Obi-Wan's faux Krayt yell
And the 2019 Disney Plus/Blu-Ray rerelease, which is notable for having Greedo get the last word.

When we say "original cut", we're referring to the 1977 version, with or without 'New Hope' moniker.

There is not one single version of A New Hope as it existed upon release in 1977.

Every single reel of the film that was screened in 1977 differed depending on which individual theater exhibited it.

Every single reel differed? So what you’re suggesting is that each theater had a different version of Star Wars (not A New Hope) upon release? Okay, I’ll bite. Link?

Oh, no question.

Based on the print (70mm vs 35mm), there were different sound mixes. But if I recall correctly, on May 25, 1977, there were 32 70mm prints in circulation which would have the same sound mix. Therefore, the original version of Star Wars. (That number would rise after initial success.)

This comment runs contrary to the incredibly meticulously researched information that has been imparted over the years by a very well-connected and influential member of the Star Wars community, one Bryan Young (former contributor to Star Wars.Com and current co-host of the Full of Sith Podcast).

Then post the meticulous research and don’t just allude to it. You’re presenting a statement which is going against what many are saying here. It’s your job to prove it.

I’ll admit there’s a little more nuance to my statement and I was working to post that when your response came up. Still, the original 32 70mm prints were 6 channel Dolby stereo. Those are the earliest prints and can be considered to be the original version of Star Wars. This article speaks to that point.

I don't have a link to provide because the information about every individual film print of Star Wars/A New Hope that was screened in 1977 being different has been presented and discussed most frequently LIVE at various conventions on panels hosted by Bryan.

He has, IIRC, also discussed the subject on the Full of Sith Podcast, but at 613 episodes currently, I could not tell you specifically when said discussion happened.

Again, I’m wondering if what you mean is the idea of the different audio versions. There were three distinct versions of the audio mix which have been meticulously researched and compared:

70MM six track Dolby Stereo
35MM Dolby Stereo
Mono Mix (I believe just 35MM)

This concept of every print being different is absolutely ludicrous. And that you can’t produce the evidence is not doing an ounce to make anyone think your argument holds water.

Believe what you want.

I trust Bryan - whom I've actually met - and the information he's presented.

But you refuse to actually do the legwork to produce the information to us, basically telling us to Google it. While I find that an extremely lazy way of debating, I did Google it, including searching both Full of Sith and Bryan. And guess what? I’ve come up with nothing. I have found a ton of information in regards to the different audio mixes and the different sound effects, takes of dialogue, even entire voice performers being switched out, but nothing suggesting that every single print was different based upon the theater you saw it in. You would think that would be a very easy bit of research to find as it would be extremely controversial.

Alas…
