Perhaps the weapon is a prototype and is notoriously unstable when used with the Galaxy class starships but is much safer in a starship with modern hardware and infrastructure. In using the weapon Riker could have possibly caused a warp core breach or something but had to act fast to save the crew of the Pasteur.

Thank God grew up. What a complete fanboy-wreck. Gimme the old and proper Ent-D any day of the week.

Re: Phaser Cannon:

I take the Phaser Cannon as not being a Phaser Cannon after seeing the Voyager episode Retrospect. I now think of it as an Isokinetic Cannon.

^ Before I forget: Playmates toys released an Enterprise-D around 1997/98 of the Enterprise-D Refit. It could transform from the standard Galaxy Class to the refitted version.

It is now a pretty big collectors item. I've seen it go on eBay for $500+
