Alien Nation to be remade by TIM MINEAR on SyFy

Sounds cool. I loved Alien Nation and was pissed when Fox canned it. Hopefully SyFy will make it a success.

Severely torn here. I like Tim Minnear and liked Alien Nation but....I don't know. Sometimes I wish they'd leave the past stuff alone and come up with something of their own.

I love the original series, and would love to see it return to the screen, although I almost wish we could see the actors from the series return rather than re-casting, but it has been too long at this point...

Hopefully Kenneth Johnson can be involved in some capacity. From the commentary tracks on the DVDs, he's the one who made a mediocre buddy cop movie into a worthwhile television series (as much as I love Farscape, Rockne S. Obannon's version isn't great).

I think there is TONS of potential in this type of series, but I'd much prefer a movie then a series.

Why? The film didn't fulfill the premise, and even the television movies didn't use it as well as a continuing series did.

I loved the TV series, but I think it might be too soon for a remake.
Can no one think of something new these days?

You know, the stars of the original movie do TV now. Maybe they can cast James Caan and Mandy Patinkin. Of course, Patinkin would just quit after the first season. Or quit right before the third season and not tell anyone.

You know, they could just use the general premise of aliens living on earth among humans as a springboard -- it doesn't have to be cops and robbers again. How about aliens who play for the New York Giants? Or who are in the porn industry? :p

Remaking a movie that starred Jimmy Caan?! That is just not right!

You mean, you don't love the Rollerball remake? :p

I think an Alien Nation remake could be interesting. I thought the movie was okay, no big shakes but it was an intriguing concept, just not fully realised. Never saw any of the previous tv version so I can't comment on it. However, done right, this could build on the original concept much as BSG built on and improved (IMHO) on Glen A Larson's original idea. The comparison with North African ghettos in France has potential. This series could reflect issues like immigration, fundamentalism, segregation etc. Sci-fi such as the original Star Trek and nuBSG frequently can provide metaphors and commentary for real life topical, social and political situations and this may be a very good possibility for that.

Of, and of course, anything with Minear's involvement has to be worth a watch.

Is this to be a new series or SyFy Movie of the Week?

If a series it could be interesting. Alien Nation was an interesting, well made, and well thought-out series. The ammount of culture and richness they gave the Newcomers was incredible.

Unnecessary.

And the original actors from the series are all still around. I met Michelle and Eric at a con a few years ago and they look great. A continuation with them as the same characters would be no problem at all - the Franciscos 20 years on, with the kids all grown up with their own families.

The series has a place in my heart. I'm gettin' tired of people screwing with that.

I think it was a great show that was cut short before it got anywhere near to achieving it's potential, on those grounds I welcome somebody taking another shot at it.
