Alex Kurtzman Gets New Deal With CBS, Will Expand 'Star Trek' TV

But why did every single Klingon in the season get depicted that way? It wouldn't have taken much work to have a few other kinds of Klingons hanging out in the back of the room in some of the crowd scenes.
I agree. I actually think it would have been cooler to have Voq look like a human the whole time and him just be hanging out with a load of other people who look like humans and we’d be all like “are they Maquis? Are they terra prime?” But then the DSC twist machine comes on and is like “no Trekkers, they’re Klingons dun dun dun!”

But maybe there was a planet wide deal on plastic surgery on Qo’NoS just prior to DSC but another virus got into the genome and it made all the Klingons throughout the empire look like remans. Until the aging Dr Antaak who was the only doctor in the empire was able to undo the damage and restore everyone to their ENT appearance using captain archer’s dna as a template.

CBS sees the writing on the wall, and knows broadcast TV is dying. It doesn't want to sign a deal with someone like Netflix or Amazon (or even Hulu) because it understands the end-result of this would be CBS reduced to running a production studio and being a virtual shadow of itself in a decade or two. In order to survive it needs to have a successful streaming platform. In order to have a successful streaming platform it needs native content. Right now, Star Trek is the most lucrative native content it can offer.

WWE network appears to be doing fine. If McMahon Family can do that, then Star Trek has got to be a ton easier to leverage, if more expensive to produce. CBSAA is the de facto Trek Network in the U.S it seems. (Well, Trek and NCIS from what I hear...we use netflix over here. I only subbed for DSC and the other series when it was announced, and kept waiting and staying subbed because I found things to watch on it.) If they can get their hands on streaming rights for the movies, and all the various making of bits and bobs over the year...heck, gag reels, shatters documentaries, the new Ds9 documentary....well, that’s a ton of content all stuck together in one place. It’s what I would do.
I would then consider paling up with SyFy, and a few others in the SF&F business historically and create something like a SciFi streaming channel.
The stuff on Netflix and Amazon Prime is very hit and miss apart from a few new shows, and over here at least, the content is as likely to vanish after six months or so.
Put Firefly, Killjoys, Dark Matter, Treks etc in one place and it’s print money time. It’s basically Netflix strategy atm in some areas over here.

We did see a Klingon wearing a very TMP on wards looking Klingon uniform in the council chambers in the season finale.

He still didn't have hair though.

Hmmm.. Expansion eh?

I would love to see a new Filmation style continuation of the classic adventures of the Original Enterprise, while Shatner and other surviving cast members are still alive. (think Doctor Who Big Finish voice overs but set to the filmation style cartoon) Maybe 4 seasons more and a couple of specials to release on Sci-Fi or Netflix, or their platform. I would also love to see a Filmation style retro cartoon also of the Next Gen cast. Those two things (oh and in TNG every spin off can make story appearances, like the Enterprise is docked at DS9 or something.. this is ofcourse set after Voyager, so it would be perfect to do as a cartoon series. Those two ideas there would bring me back, even if STD does have a shitty season 2, at least to episode 5. But as of now, I canceled my subscription after the season finale was over. It didn't seem worth it with netflix and HULU already on my viewing list Payroll.

Reading this you suggest essentially more of established Star Trek rather than an actual expansion of the universe (I.e. a story with a new crew in a new context, etc.) just a continuation of the TOS and TNG stories? On one level I don’t have a problem with that - I have great affection for the TOS and TNG characters, but do you think it speaks to the relative success (or lack thereof depending on how you look at it) of DSC to get fans to buy into its premise? I wonder whether we’d be hoping for more of what we’ve already seen if DSC had been more consistently compelling overall.

They'll need to expand beyond the US if that's their plan and there's always the chance they've left it too late to beat Netflix etc

They're currently working on expanding beyond the US. They're launching in Canada and Australia. Presumably, UK is the next market to target.

These new Trek shows may or may not be on Netflix internationally as the Netflix deal was probably strictly with Discovery only.

While all access is coming to Canada, I believe it was confirmed that DSC will not be on it, at least not exclusively.

I think it is the same in Australia as well

You are completely correct. Discovery is a Netflix property and shall always be a Netflix property for the lifetime of the show; they did invest over $100 million in the rights for Discovery. But future Trek shows may or may not be part of this deal, no one knows except those involved in it.

CBS have almost zero brand recognition here. They have two channels on freeview, but they aren’t exactly setting the world afire. Outside of Trek fans and maybe NCIS fans, we basically have no concept of them. Paramount had a bigger profile back in the day, because they were on popular shows and movies, with a distinctive logo (that was harder to avoid)
It’s always strange here when we see some like an American network name turn up in our entertainment....I think Fox have made inroads with their channels, but that’s it tbh. Their brand is a non-entity here.
Still.
If the Viacom merger thing goes off and doesn’t screw the pooch, I can imagine ‘Paramount’ getting some traction. It has a history with a good target demographic.

Netflix has the broadcast rights to DSC, they don't own the property itself. Don't know how much of the financing deal grants ownership, if any.

Yeah, there is no way that CBS is giving up any ownership rights for DSC just to have a distribution deal with Netflix.

Well, having the focus of a retro style cartoon feature the TOS or TNG universe sounds really good to me as a life long fan. While I can see the appeal of trying to tout the new direction, I think the appeal of STD in such a venue would fall on def ears. If the fandom proper is able to get a bit of red meat with what succeded before, then that interest may add more CBSAA subscribers, while maybe adding more interest in the new Trek Properties Kurtzman wants to produce. To me, STD wasn't so much lacking compelling stories, as it was divisive and dismisive of fans complaints. This serves only to rile up the classic fan, and drive them off CBS all access. The initial sign up was touted as a success for the online streaming platform, however subscriptions past the season finale show many people left, and didn't renew. Myself included. This revelation may also be why there's been such turmoil in the Trek productions to date.

How could they dismiss fan complaints if no one saw the show before it came out?
I'm speaking about after STD aired. Those complaints were trivialized as racist and sexist. Tho many were legit and didn't have a focus on that at all. But reaction from show producers on various social media platforms only angered long time fans with accusations like that, simply because fans weren't happy with aspects of the show.
