Alex Kurtzman Gets New Deal With CBS, Will Expand 'Star Trek' TV

Well, having the focus of a retro style cartoon feature the TOS or TNG universe sounds really good to me as a life long fan.
I'm not understanding the love for a Filmation-style animated series. The animation was really limited and stilted. Many of the stories were awful. There were a few stand outs, but, to me, not enough to warrant a revitalisation of that style of animation. I have no problem with a new animated series, but I'd like smoother animation than Filmation presented. (or, am I missing the point, as I have been known to do?)

I'm speaking about after STD aired. Those complaints were trivialized as racist and sexist.
Forgive me if I don't take the word of the guy who routinely makes racist and sexist posts in Trek, Star Wars, and Doctor Who threads, and then denies that they're either racist or sexist, at face value on this issue.

There's a pretty toxic and vocal subset of fandom who have kneejerk negative reaction to the casting of women, minorities, and LGBTQ people in prominent roles on genre shows and movies, regardless of their talent or experience, and they have been shitting up various fan forums and social media for some time.

It's bad enough that they fuck up the experience for other people who just want to enjoy their entertainment without feeling like they've been thrust into the middle of a Klan rally, but beyond that, not a single one of these snowflakes will just up and admit to what they are. They all falsely cry about civility like this is the first time the word "racist" has ever touched their virgin ears before.

I'm sick of the whole bunch of them. Can't they go off and form their own bigoted sci-fi forums and leave us to argue about the important stuff, like Klingon makeup changes? Seriously, start a spinoff of Stormfront called Scifront and reminisce about the good ole' days when all the lead actors were straight white men and the wimynz knew their place.

Now that the genie's been let out of the bottle, it's going to be interesting to see how the discourse plays out online over the long-term, meaning the next several years. We're literally in uncharted territory. There's no other time in the Internet Age to compare now to. It's like a Cyber Version of what the '60s and '70s must've been like and what would've gone on online had the Web been around.

I agree. Filmation style animation appeals to our sense of nostalgia, but is tedious in large doses.

Well...it's a generational thing. Which we all know accounts for purchases of properties that have a certain nostalgia factor. Filmation has this connection with fans, as many of us grew up with them on our tv's.

I'm one of those people who grew up with them. As a kid, I loved them (I even have a cel from "Yesteryear", the famous 6 fingered Spock) , but trying to watch them as an adult can be painful

I agree. There are some standout episodes tho. Some I really like. Some, I cringe. But for the most part, I still like it as a series. The cartoon Archer has a similar feel to Filmation. It does pretty well. I think if a star trek cartoon series were to happen, then it could open the door to merchandise, comics, tees, and action figures. I'd love to see the TNG universe as a cartoon. Maybe even something akin to the DC cartoon movies., Filmation may be outdated, but it would be nice to get a few more seasons out of that TAS universe before the actors are gone for good.

Hey! Remember when they played TAS on Nickelodeon, after "You can't do that on television" and before "Danger Mouse" and "Mr. Wizard's world?" Good times..

If Floyd County Productions (Archer's studio) got the Trek animated series job I'd be ecstatic. It's got the right level of "realism". For example all the cars and such are identically proportioned to their real world counterparts so that would make the Trek Tech guys happy.

Oh my goodness...
You just reminded me that I also have an actual filming cell from TAS.
Man, I've had it packed away for so long I don't even remember what it's of.

I grew up with the filmation saturday morning garbage. It was cheap looking garbage with colors that made no sense, low frames pers second, and usually generic covers like Web Woman so they didnt have to pay licences, and voice actors who clearly were not the best money could buy. It was cheap stuff designed to keep the station transmitting cause Post and Kellog did not give a shit.

To put it in perspective: Filmation makes Hanna-Barbera saturday morning quality look good.

And none of those things would affect a cartoon made in that style, in the 21st century.
