"Akira" class-A joke?

Is the name "Akira" an injoke? I ask because i was watching an early Simpsons episode today and remembered that George Takei played a character named "Akira". I wondered if the ship class is an injoke on this? Its not past star trek, since I know the "reliant" was a joke as well, since that was the car Ricardo Montalban was advertising.

I imagine that the Akira-class was named after the anime movie 'Akira'. Since it was designed by a non-Trek fan, I doubt it has anything to do with an obscure reference to George Takei :)

Besides the name "Akira Class" has never been uttered in Star Trek. This is only a production note, widely accepted, just like the Daedalus conceptual art.

ok, I will tell an Akira joke....

An Intrepid, a Prometheus and an Akira warp into a solar system.......

^ :)

Why did the Akira-class ship warp to the other side of the solar system?

To get to the other side!

Why does the Akira class U.S.S. Eire have three sensor arrays?

To be sure, to be sure, to be sure!

Why is an Akira class ship like toilet paper?

They go around Uranus and they both clean up Klingons!

I love the Akira class, its one of my all time favourite designs along with the Nova Class and Defiant Class and the name is kickass. ;)

Why did the Akira go to the Gamma Quadrant?

because every hole is a goal.

When Daniels dropped his PADD on the floor of the 602 Club and the future chief designer of the NX-01 picked it up and handed it back, can you guess what class of 24th-century ship was displayed?

I dont understand why its so hard to believe that a starship designer in the 24th century couldnt have picked out an old NX01 design and remodel it for the 24th century, some people do that you know, take cars for instance they took the old VW Beatle design and remodeled it and made it more up to date.

Most people dont tend to like to asociate the designs, Akira is a fan fav where as for most people Enterprise is something they cant take.

I think its perfectly reasonable to retcon that the Akira was designed after the NX class...and as two of my fav ships I dont mind at all.

Its funny I remember pre Enterprise coming out someone said "how cool would it be for an Enterprise not to be an 'Enterprise' but be something like an Akira instead"

Alot of people liked that idea

More like they built an all-new car with all-new aesthetics and gave it a recycled name.

Why recycle old aesthetics? In cars, it might make some sense for marketability reasons. But in starships? The telltale similarities between NX-01 and Akira, such as the "raised hood", the bow notch, and the "turbocharger caps" on the booms, do not even seem to serve the same function in the two designs.

The NX-01 hood is higher at the center than forward or aft, making it impractical as a headroom-increasing trick; the Akira one is flat and more plausibly improves the habitability of the top deck.

The NX-01 bow notch features a sensor or deflector dish with blue backlighting; the Akira one has three identical openings that may be launch tubes of some sort.

The NX-01 turbocharger caps fire phase cannon beams; the Akira ones do not look the slightest bit like other Akira-era beam weapons.

Okay, so perhaps the same choices are defensible on both ships for different reasons. But why are they not seen on other types of ship? As long as they are unique to these two near-identical designs, they look like purely aesthetical choices rather than functional ones.

Also, because we KNOW for a fact that the NX is based on the Akira, not the other way around, and we know for a fact it's because Berman made a decision based on laziness, ennui, apathy, ignorance of fandom....

The "old and busted" and "new hotness" Beetles have features which resemble one another visually yet have different functions. The large hatch on the front of the old Beetle covered the trunk, and the large hatch on the back of the old Beetle covered the engine. The two corresponding hatches of the new Beetle had opposite functions.

I've never seen a photo of the Akira class starship? Which series/episode should I look for it?

The movie first contact, Voy: Message in a Bottle and Endgame. DS9: Call to Arms, Favor the Bold, Sacrifice of Angels, Tears of the Prophets, Changing Face of Good and Evil, What You Leave Behind.

Or just look it up on MemoryAlpha or Wikipedia.

The Akira is to Star Trek starships what Boba Fett is to Star Wars characters... or it would be if the Akira had been featured with slightly more prominence. :p

The Akira class is an extremely obscure bit of Trek minutae that is glimpsed for a total of about three minutes in all of the many hundreds of hours of Trek. Why people get so worked up about the NX-01's similarities is beyond me.

And let's not forget, the Akira designers can just as easily be accused of ripping off the Reliant. Which can just as easily be accused of ripping off the original 1701 by simply turning it upside down.

There's only so much you can do with a saucer and nacelles. The ships all look similar, the NX-01 and the Akira no more so than any others.
