The last few boxsets have been said to use "AI upscaling" techniques (20, 15, 25, 7), though previous season sets also had computer algorithms used to improve picture quality. Even "VIDFire", used to improve/render more fluid the frame rate technically qualifies.

And yet, only 13 and 21 show some very goofy issues, like:
  1. Text smear in even foreground objects where it was legible before the "cleanup", which is a telltale sign
  2. occasional dirt flecks on surface or camera that magically disappear (not often)
  3. Too many objects look too smooth or waxy, with detail accidentally scrubbed out
  4. There's partial horizontal stretch in some scenes (not major at all)

And yet:

  1. There are plenty of screenshots where the blu-ray looks to be a genuine improvement in detail despite the goofy issues elsewhere
  2. The color/contrast fixing is still superb
  3. Some light bleed and moiré are absolutely improved upon considering the source material
  4. The waxiness visage isn't consistent (I had few issues with "Warriors of the Deep", for example)
  5. Some shots on the SD original (and compressed DVD) had a waxy look to begin with, which can't be worsened
  6. Season 21 had a lot of haloing to begin with, which isn't as pronounced on blu compared to DVD (less compression applied, too)
  7. One video showing the Myrka's POV is supposed to look distorted and the DVD shot is still worse

What say you, do you think the modern upscaling techniques are too much, too little, good overall, too early to be used in professional releases, or other?

(there's definitely 16mm segments found in this, which look sumptuous... a shame "The Two Doctors"' location footage doesn't exist...)

IMHO, there are still issues, and earlier releases do look at least consistent, and anyone watching these on a smartphone screen wouldn't get the best comparison.
